FINISHING OFF

When the hair wing has been tied in it can be an idea to put a drop
of clear varnish on it.When this is dry tie in two jungle cock eyes
if you have them.Jungle cock is not essential but finishes the fly
nicely and I think it makes the fly more attractive, both to the fish
and the angler.Certainly I find that I have more confidence in the fly.

When you are satisfied that everything is well and the hair wing is tidily
in place you can whip finish with a neat head. The secret to a tidy head
is to reduce the amount of turns taken to secure the materials at every
step to a minimum. Also do not bring the tying too close to the eye of
the waddington, this leaves plenty of room to get a nicely shaped
head. Give the head a couple of coats of varnish leaving each
coat to dry before reapplying.Resist the temptation to varnish in
one go as things tend to go astray.Unless you have a very fancy
vice you will have to tie waddintons on their side, which can be a
bit awkward.

FISHING METHODS.

This fly can be used with any conventioal methods, but personally I
prefer a medium sink line and a leader of moderate length.A good
thickness of leader is neede if the fly is to turn over properly. I usually
use no less than 10lb.

In heavy to moderate water the cast should be made well square accross
the current and a big mend thrown upstream immediately. The line should be
followed around with the rod tip until the line is at 45 degrees accross
the current. A retrieve is then started the speed of which should keep the
fly fishing parralel too and just above the bottom. It takes a bit of practise
to get this ight, and a good pair of polaroids is a help. It is important to know
exactly where your fly is at all times. When the line is directly below you hang
the fly for a second or two as fish sometimes follow, only taking when
the fly slows down or stops. Takes can be very gentle, giving a couple of
taps or just tightening the line.Because of the treble a good hooking rate
is usual,and the hold good.
