TACKLE AND CLOTHING. |

Tackle and equipment vary widely with the taste and experience of individual anglers, however here are a few guidlines as to what generally catches fish. RODS For the majority of the season single handed rods are the order of the day at Kylemore, for both river and lake, indeed one of the pleasures of fishing here is landing grilse on tackle that they can give a good scrap on. A suitable weapon would be 10ft - 10ft 6in throwing an 8 weight line. Lines used are mostly floating, but sinking lines are rapidly gaining favour, especially in higher water. Intermediates or "slime lines"are popular on the lakes. A rod must suit its user though, and as long casting is rarely needed, a favourite rod is often a good option. When the weather is wet and windy a light double handed rod is often used to over come the breeze,or to present a heavier fly.Something in the range 12ft-13ft throwing a 8-10 weight line is ideal. CLOTHING The west of Ireland has a climate that constantly ignores the rules of season, and a robust set of waterproofs is essential if travelling here. Wellies will suffice as wading is not a part of the fishing here, but thigh waders are sometimes used as a step into the river can hide the angler from a wary fish, midge repellant and/or a midge net is vital. |
