EDWARD J LAW.
BISHOPSLOUGH, BENNETTSBRIDGE, Co. KILKENNY, IRELAND.
Was educated at Huddersfield College, qualified as a Chartered Accountant and worked in Huddersfield and Cheshire. Practised for a number of years as a professional genealogist and had wide experience in researching civil and ecclesiastical records in English archives and record centres. He now lives in semi-retirement in the heart of the Irish countryside.
Has had a long and deep interest in local history. Was a committee member of Huddersfield Local History Society until moving to Ireland, when he was elected an honorary member of the Society.
Is a past Secretary of Dúchas, the Tullaherin parish heritage society, and a council member of Kilkenny Archaeological Society. He edited the Society's journal, Old Kilkenny Review, for the years 1994, 1995, 1996, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Is interested in antique silver and was for many years a corresponding member of the Silver Society, and is a member of the Ephemera Society. Current collecting interests are Crest Albums, UK Free Franks, and Livery buttons on all of which topics he has written. He also curated exhibitions and displays for Kilkenny Archaeological Society: Collecting arms, crests and monograms: a forgotten pastime, Summer 2003 (and wrote a book to accompany the exhibition: see Bibliography below); Bookplates in the Society's Library 2006; Kilkenny authors and printers 2009.
As a past scholar of Huddersfield College and in pursuit of an interest in silver, he has undertaken research on the prize medals of Huddersfield College, of which a variety were awarded over the years 1841-1879. The Tolson Memorial Museum at Huddersfield have a good representative collection of these very attrractive medals, and there is another major collection in private hands.
He would be grateful to receive any information on the topic (lawe@eircom.net) and would be happy to pass on information from his research notes.
Illustrated here are the two faces of the Huddersfield College Commercial medal of 1879 which was awarded to W D Halstead. At this date the medals feature a cast silver border which adds greatly to the attractiveness of the medals.
