ATTENDANCE POLICY

Rationale:

In accordance with the Education Welfare Act and with the aim of the School's Mission Statement "to encourage high standards", this policy has as its purpose the promotion of maximum attendance by each pupil.

Recording of Absences:

  1. Each teacher is requested to take an accurate roll call at 09.00. and at 13.45. and to record this precisely on the sheet provided.

  2. The roll sheet is to be sent to the office where attendance is recorded.

  3. A list of absent pupils is displayed during the morning in the staff room.

Verifying and Recording Reasons for Absence:
  1. Year Heads are asked to check the daily list of absent pupils or, if preferred, to take copies of the list. In order to trace instances of truancy, it is important that Year Heads would check the Absence List before midday.

  2. If a Year Head considers appropriate, s/he may phone the home of an absent pupil to check the reason for absence, or may ask the Deputy Principal to do so.

  3. On her return to school, each pupil who has been absent for a day or part of a day is required to present a dated note signed by her parent/guardian, stating clearly the reason for her absence. (Should the reason for her absence be of a particularly confidential nature, the parent/guardian may also make personal explanatory contact with the Year Head or other school authority; however, a note, albeit one stating the reason for absence in general terms, must be submitted to the Year Head to be retained as record of explained absence.)

  4. Each Year Head is asked to file and retain all absence notes for the current school year.

Reporting of Absence to School Welfare Authority:

To comply with legislation, the name of any pupil who has been absent for a total of 20 or more days must be sent by the School Management to the above authority.

Positive Measures to Encourage High Levels of Attendance:

Legislation requires the Board of Management to promote positive measures to encourage high levels of attendance. For the purpose of implementing this requirement the following measures will be adopted:

  1. Certificates of Full or of Excellent Attendance will be given to pupils deemed to have achieved such. ( These may be accompanied by a small prize of a book or other token, where school finances permit.)

  2. Attendance will be recorded on the School Report sent to parents/guardians during the school year.
