1. Book review:
“NLP & Sport – How to achieve your own peak performance!” by Joseph O’Connor
- Joseph O’Connor’s book doesn’t need any previous NLP knowledge at all, which is an aspect that I like about this book. It is very practical and really “hands on”. It includes lots of examples and exercises that can be used and applied for a variety of sports, individuals as well as teams.
He starts with setting goals, moves on to imagery, being in the zone, how to deal with possible distractions, energy and intensity (finding the right level of excitement, not being over excited nor being to relaxed) for a match or competition. He finishes with “After the game” and how to learn from you performance and how to deal with injuries.
Each chapter is summarised, which I found very useful to recap a chapter if you are looking for the essence of a chapter.
The Glossary explains mainly sport, health and fitness related expressions, I could only find a few NLP related words, which again shows that he doesn’t expect any NLP pre-knowledge.
He finishes the book with an “Index of Exercises” that lists every exercise in the book with it’s purpose, the problem it tackles and it’s benefits. Ideal if you have read the book and you want to combine various exercises for your sport.
I say a highly recommendable book for everybody who wants to enjoy a competition or match even more and who aims to improve his/her performance in any sport.

People from all walks of life, from professional athletes e.g. DJ Carey, the British Premiership team Bolton Wanderers & Sunderland, in the Eircom League the Bohemians Football Club, British National Rowing Squad, the All Blacks, the Australian National Swim Squad to business people, have turned to Pilates for a variety of reasons.
Pilates allows participants to stay mentally alert, physically flexible, subtle and relaxed, which is important when a large part of your day is spent at a desk. Pilates is also used by the older generation to stay again flexible, subtle and to retain good posture.
Nowadays more and more of my class participants get told by their physiotherapist to attend a Pilates class to ease back pain, back issues and to stretch and strengthen the back and various abdominal muscles.
Dancers have used Pilates for decades to reach the objectives above mentioned. Pilates allows you to become more physically and mentally aware. As your sense of body awareness and co-ordination develops, you will be able to control other aspects of your body more easily, e.g. relaxing and focusing.
Pilates is a set of subtle and simple exercises that are easy to follow. Everyone can do it, irrespective of age or level of fitness, as all movements are joint friendly and impact free. All you need are some loose clothes, an exercise mat and a willingness to try something new to enhance the quality of your life & sport performance.
The following benefits can be achieved by practicing Pilates on a regular basis:
1. Improved posture & back strength
2. Increased core strength ( your abdominals & back)
3. Boosted immune system & more energy
4. Reduced back pain
5. Enhanced muscle tone
6. Helps to prevent injury
Pilates can be performed on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting. A typical class balances toning and strength exercises with relaxation. The class consists of a warm up phase, the actual Pilates moves & postures, a warm down phase combined with stretching and a few minutes relaxation.

Now you can avail of body fat & body water measurement with a Tanita weighing scale.
Body fat is a much better indicator for health than the pure weight measurement. Different people have different so called body frames and due to this they are
likely to loose or put on weight in different ways.
Another aspect is that if you start to do the correct weight training for you, you will tone up and loose inches. At the same time you might not loose weight
on the scale, because the density of muscle, that you gained, is higher than the density of fat that you lost. This means you lost body fat weight but put on
muscle weight.
This can easily be identified with a body fat monitor.

At the moment I'm looking for one volunteer with whom I will work together to write an NLP thesis. Ideally the person is actively involved in a competitive sport e.g. athletics, rugby, hurling, gaelic, tennis etc.
We would team up and apply various NLP techniques, tools over several weeks or months with the aim to improve your sport specific achievements, accomplishment.
The reason behind this is that I will be starting a course to be a NLP Master Practitioner, that's the next level on the NLP education ladder, at the end of November. The Master Practitioner will allow me to deepen the already existing NLP expertise and learn new highly effective tools. For the NLP Master Practitioner it is necessary to write a thesis.
If you know of anybody who might be interested please pass my contact details on.

The class will be free for you. Please let me know if you might be interested in participating.
