Mountmellick Debaters Score A Hat Trick
All three debating teams from Mountmellick Community School achieved great success in Laois County Council Debates 2000.
Against very challenging opposition, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings (4-6 April), some very informative and lively debates ensued in Laois County Hall.
MCS Senior A Debating team, under the guidance of Ms Kinnarney, consisting of Lorna W. (captain), Siobhan C., Stephanie T. and Carol D., succeeded on Wednesday evening last. They were opposing the motion that “increasing incidence of drug abuse in Ireland is an indictment of failure of Irish society.”
Junior Debates were held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. MCS Junior B team won their debate on Tuesday, under the tutorship of Ms Keating. They were proposing the motion that “the recent refugee crisis has shown the Irish as a racist society.” The team was Ellen D. (captain), Lucy O’L., Sharon D., Heather J. and Elaine F.
Proving that “current house prices will change the culture of house ownership in Ireland”, MCS Junior A team gave the school its third debating victory, with help from Ms Wafer, on Thursday night. Team A were Melissa F., Denise C. (captain), Nuala C. and Edward G.
Best of luck to all teams going into the subsequent rounds of the Debating competition, including MCS Senior B team of Emer O’L., Ciara F. and Rosemary W.
