A Four Way Video Conference |

St. Ethelbert's School |
||
We had a very interesting VC on April 19th. We used a VC bridge hosted by Global Leap. This meant that four schools could communicate at the same time. Our partners in this conference were: James Brindley Hospital School, Birmingham, St. Ethelbert's Primary School, Slough and Merry's English School, Ako City, Hyogo, Japan. Special thanks to Mike Griffith of Global Leap for his help. |

The Japanese students told us about the Japanese Hina Dolls that are used to celebrate Girls' Day on March 3rd in Japan. did you know that Japanese grandparents buy a set of dolls for their first grand-daughter? The dolls are very expensive and they are displayed on red steps. On the top step sit the emperor and empress, next sit three handmaidens and then come the musicians. We thought the dolls were beautiful. On girls' day special sweet rice cakes are eaten.
Look at the tatami floor. You must take offyour shoes before you walk on it. |
We learned that Japanese students wear navy blue uniforms with jackets like sailor suits. We also learned that traditional rooms have floors of tatami - woven rice straw. It was 11 am in Dublin and in England and 7pm in Ako city. |

Anatatachi no hina ningyo wa totemo kirei deshita. Domo arigato gozaimashita. (Your hina dolls were beautiful. Thank you very much.) |
Our Web Quest |
We did a webquest on the Early Explorers and these are the books we produced for the school library on Christopher Columbus, Bartholomew Dias, John Cabot, Prince Henry the Navigator, Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco da Gama. We worked in groups and enjoyed using the internet, reference books and CDRoms for our research. We learned a lot of new skills. We summarised our books in Powerpoint presentations. If you would like to try our teacher's webquest on the Early Explorers click the link below. |
Around the World Christmas Story |
We are writing the eighth chapter of Book Two of an "Around the World Christmas Story" on the Gigglepotz website. Schools from the United States, Australia, England and Ennis, Co. Clare are writing the other chapters. We have to wait and read all the other chapters first because our chapter will be the last one. |
Planting Daffodil Bulbs - October 10th 2001
Last year we learned to sing a song called "Leave them a Flower". It was about leaving something good behind for the next generation. Because we are leaving primary school this year we invited Junior Infants to help us plant some daffodil bulbs that would brighten the school grounds for many years to come, maybe even for our own children! |
||
First we decided where to plant the bulbs and prepared the soil. Rachel's granny came to help us. Then we collected the children from junior infants. They were very excited. We showed them which way to plant the bulbs (root side down). We planted about ten bulbs around each tree. We are looking forward to the day in spring when they flower.
When we returned to the classroom we studied some bulbs. First we looked at the brown papery covering on the outside and then we cut the bulbs open. Inside they looked just like an onion except for the middle where, if you looked closely, you could see where the baby flower was beginning to grow. The new leaf shoots in the middle were yellow because they get no light. Bulbs are really the base of a plants leaves and they store all the food for the next year's plant to grow. |
This bulb has a baby bulb growing beside it. |
The "Kewmobile" On September 5th we visited the "Kewmobile" in the National Botanic Gardens Glasnevin. What is a "Kewmobile"? It is a mobile education unit from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew in London. |
|
We studied the rainforest with Catherine in the "Kewmobile" and we went on a tour of the greenhouses with Sarah and Rosemary where we saw tropical plants, cacti and insect eating plants. We also saw some weird gourds hanging from the roof.
