Northern elephant seals live in the open ocean except during breeding, birthing, and molting seasons when they come on to the shore. Northern elephant seals' diet includes sharks, eels, squids, fish, skates and rays. Northern elephant seals are eaten by killer whales and large sharks. Elephant seals get their names because of their enormous bodies and long noses on the males which look a little like elephants' trunks. Elephant seals are pinnipeds belonging to the same family as other seals and walruses. Like all pinnipeds, elephant seals shed their tan or brown coloured hair and skin once each year and grow new skin and hair. This is called molting . All pups are born with all black coats. |
