Do I Want A Siberian Husky?

If after reading this page the answer to the above question is yes, then be advised. Huskies are addictive. My Humans started with just one (me) and now they have six.

Background.
Originally Huskies were used and bred by the Ckukchi, a nomadic tribe in Siberia. During the winter months Huskies were used to pull laden sleds at moderate speed, over frozen Tundra for long distances by day, and by night they slept with the children to keep them warm. I have heard that because of this that any dog that showed signs of aggression toward humans was culled from the pack. This may or not be true but, any Husky that I have encountered seems especially affectionate, tolerant and protective toward children. In the summer they usually ran loose in packs, hunting and fending for themselves. To this day they have retained a strong instinct to roam and hunt.

Traits,likes and dislikes.

Sociable and curious.
As dogs go we Huskies make excellent watch dogs. We will watch a burglar take the T.V. the stereo and anything else of value that may be lying around. And if he is really nice we may even go with him. Especially if he gives us treats. We usually love to meet new people and if we are in a new place there's nothing we like more than a good nosy around sniffing every nook and cranny. We need and love company so please do not keep a Husky in solitude. It will drive the dog insane. All we want is company. Dog or human, we're not fussy as long as we're not mistreated.

Escape Artist
We Huskies have become known as Houdini dogs because of our ability to escape from places that confine other dogs for years without a problem. Because of our nomadic heritage and innate desire to hunt, we will roam at any given opportunity. So if you want to keep us around you need a fence or wall that we can't climb over or dig under, and doors that we can't open or dig and chew through.

Digging
On the subject of digging. We love to dig. I could do it all day. We don't have a destructive nature. We dig to store food or to make a nice warm bed in the snow. Whether there's snow or not. If you can't bear the idea of a few holes in your lawn or garden, keep us out of it.
