A GREAT win for Cappagh over Monagea in the West Junior A football championship at Knockaderry GAA Grounds on Friday evening last. The win moves them ahead of Monagea in the chase for semi-final places. This was a very exciting game of football between two very committed sides intent on gaining victory. The sides were level on four occasions as the lead changed hands several times and Cappagh came from five points behind to win by three in the end. They were deserving winners, getting 15 scores to ten and they drove 12 wides to five. They still made hard work of winning, though allowing Monagea back into contention several times. Cappagh raced into a four-point lead after 11 minutes and missed as much more. Monagea hit them for a goal and a point to level, by the 17th minute. Cappagh led again only for Monagea to level and move ahead. Cappagh came back to level and that's how it was at half time. Monagea enjoyed their best spell of the match in the opening 11 minutes of the second half to race into a five point lead. This was a crucial period for Cappagh as defeat could mean possible elimination. They rose to the challenge and scored 1-3 to move ahead by the 24th minute. Monagea hit the equaliser on 26 minutes as the excitement increased and the result hung in the balance. Cappagh displaying greater fitness and will to win scored three points in the final few minute to record a famous win over Monagea.
Good play by Shane Guiltenane and Kenny Hogan placed Tom Stokes for the opening point for Cappagh in the sixth minute after several wides. Tom Stokes from a free won by Anthony Bourke increased their advantage on nine minutes. Denis Maune's pass placed Peter O'Dea to kick over a fine long range point in the 10th minute. A passing movement involving Tom Stokes, Diarmuid Long, Peter O'Dea, released Eamonn Roche to kick Cappagh four points ahead after 11 minute. Monagea hit back for their opening score in the 13th minutes. William Murphy and Dave Nolan created the opening for G. O'Connor to shoot to the net. John Hough from Dave Nolan's pass kicked the equaliser in the 17th minute. Tom Stokes from Eamonn Roches pass kicked Cappagh ahead again in the 19th minute. Tom Stokes from a free awarded to Denis Maune moved them two points ahead in the 23rd minute. D. J. Corbett pointed from a free won by Maurice Flavin and Pat King pointed from the kick out. Maurice Flavin put Monagea ahead from a close in free after a foul on William Murphy a minute later. Cappagh scored a goal in the 25th minute but it was disallowed for a square infringement in the 28th minute. Maurice Flavin was pointed a 45 after D. J. Corbetts effort hit the upright for a further point in the second minute. Maurice Flavin was wide from a close in free in added time to leave it Monagea 1-4 to Cappagh 0-7 at half time.

Monagea were awarded a disputed penalty in the ninth minute for a foul on Pat King, William Keane despatched the leather to the net and Maurice Flavin followed with a point after Eddie Browne was fouled to leave Monagea 2-7 to 0-8, Diarmuid Long kept Cappagh in touch by pointing in the 14th minute after good play by Eamonn Roche and Denis Maune. Tom Stokes from a free won by Diarmuid Long, had a further point in the 16th minute, Monagea had three chances for scores after this but Anthony Bourke and Tom Maune made good blocks in the danger area to clear their lines. Tom Stokes missed a close in free but made amends in the 22nd minute from a free for steps. Cappagh hit the front in the 24th minute when Tom Stokes found the net after good approach play from Kenny Hanlon and Peter O'Dea. William Murphy placed John Hough for the equaliser in the 26th minute. A great passing movement involving several players placed Tom Stokes for the lead point in the 30 minute. Cormac Walsh and Kenny Hogan in added time had further points to leave them deserving winners.
Cappagh scored 1-9 from play and five points from frees from six different players and they kicked two wide. Tom Stokes with 1-7 was the games top scorer Cappagh's best display this year with a fine all round team performance. Peter O'Dea and Diarmuid Long were outstanding at centre field. Cormac Walsh, John Stokes, Tom Maune, Tomas Neville top class defenders. Tom Stokes, Eamonn Roche, Denis Maune very good in attack. Monagea scored 1-4 from play and 1-4 from frees from six different players and kicked five wides. They were in trouble in a few areas of the field and could never stamp their authority on the game. Conor Murphy, William Keane, William Murphy, Maurice Flavin and John Hough impressed the most.
