Michael Lyng Motors U21 Championship nov 06
Mooncoin 2-7 This game was a classic with both teams warming the hearts of the supporters
in the cold climatic conditions in Piltown. These sides were very evenly
matched and not even extra time could separate the sides with the replay
likely to take place next weekend. Tullogher were quicker out of the blocks in the second half with an early
Liam Barron free setting the ball rolling. However Ray Wall responded
with a free but Barron added two more placed balls to close the gap. Thomas
O’Hanlon responded with another free to leave it 2-5 to 0-7, as
the intensity and tempo of the game quickened. Then the game turned as
Pat Hartley burst through several tackles before landing a dangerous ball
around the Mooncoin square. Edmund Cullinane reacted quicker than anybody
else, grabbing the sliotar before hammering it to the net. The Listerlin
men squandered several opportunities to level the scores but Liam Barron
managed to take one of these opportunities to level the scores and send
the game to extra time. The strengths of both sides lay in their defences with a lack of creativity upfront, however this aspect wasn’t helped by the inclement weather conditions on the day. The defences were dominated by Noel Delahunty, Derek Phelan and Padraig Doody for Mooncoin, while Tullogher were represented by Declan Grennan, Rob Forristal and Arron McCarthy. The attacking options were limited but Ray Wall, Keith Kirwin and Michael Grace for Mooncoin would expect to have done better with the chances that came their way, while Tullogher will try to be less reliant on Liam Barron’s free taking for the replay.
