It could be said that this game was decided when the toss was made prior to the throw in. The victors had first use of the breeze and took full advantage of the conditions with a serious half time lead. Thomastown were left with far too much to do and couldn’t overhaul such a substantial lead.
Mooncoin opened brightly with points from Kevin Law and Thomas Healy with Gary Ryan responding for the home side.

However Ray Wall pointed a free before scoring the all important goal which put his side in the driving seat. The winners hit a purple patch with points from Chris Hearne, Thomas Healy, Alan Walsh, Keith Kirwin and a pair from the aforementioned Wall to ensure this game was as good as over at half time. Gary Ryan managed a single response for the Thomastown, leaving the halftime score (M)1-9 to (T)0-2.

The forwards had put Mooncoin in the driving seat; it was now up to the backs to defend that lead. They began brightly with a point from a Ray Wall free however Gary Ryan responded from a placed ball almost immediately. This seemed to inspire the home team however the Mooncoin defence stood tall during this half hour of battle. The half back line of Paddy Kinsella, Derek Phelan and P.J. Rowe lead from the front and ensured a victory for their team. Even before Gary Ryan broke through for a late goal the Suirsiders were well out of sight.

The victors will have been pleased with their half backline mentioned above, while Noel Delahunty and his full back colleagues also performed heroics. Alan Walsh and Thomas O’Hanlon were competent in midfield. The forwards managed to put the scores on the board with Ray Wall and Kevin Law worthy of praise. The losers had good performances from Sean Mahony, Richard O’Hara, Gary Ryan and Stuart Waugh with Eoin Ramsbottom good in goal.
