Iverk Produce Junior B Hurling League
(20-4-2007)
Mooncoin 1-13 The locals were all packed into Mooncoin for the clash of the neighbours Carigeen, in this Junior B League tie. The home side played with first use of the wind and made the earlier running with points from Tom Curran & Kevin Law. However James Power was his usual deadly accurate from frees and tied it up after 10 minutes. There were further Mooncoin scores from Sean “Miley” Walsh, Richie Doyle and Robbie Cody to increase the lead. However the visitors responded when Power and Jamie Carroll converted a couple more frees. The home side increased their advantage before half time thanks to Cormac Daly who was having a greater influence on the game as it progressed. The half time score was Mooncoin 0-8; Carigeen 0-4. The second half began brightly for the visitors with Power converting another free to reduce the deficit to just three points. However Joe Kearns managed to convert two chances that came his way to steady the Mooncoin ship. Carigeen continued to press and Power reduced the deficit to four points. Mooncoin gave them some breathing space when Robbie Cody converted a penalty to the net after a foul by Kevin Kennedy on Sean “Miley” Walsh. At this point things became heated with a couple of incidents within several minutes. These exchanges resulted in Martin Quilty brandishing red cards to Mooncoin’s Frank Law and Carigeen’s Ivan Tobin. The play settled down and both teams began hurling once more. Carigeen continued to close thanks to James Power’s free taking. However Davy Cody and Kevin Law added points to maintain the home side’s advantage. It was at this point that Power crashed a 21 metre free through a crowd of players to the net to reignite the visitors’ chances of victory. However Richie Doyle and Robbie Cody eased the pressure on the home side with a pair of points and ensured victory for Mooncoin. This game was rather tame and Carigeen’s inability to score from play cost them dearly. Mooncoin were solid if not spectacular and had good performances in central positions with Shane Walsh and Karl Phelan dominant in defence. Cormac Daly showed his class at midfield while in attack each forward registered a score, which is a positive for the next outing. The visitors will point to the reliance of James Power’s free taking as there “Achilles Heel” and will be disappointed that their performances was below par. Their best performers on the day were James Power, Jamie Carroll, Kevin Kennedy and Richard Roche, while Jamie Hearne made a couple of good saves at crucial times. Scorers: Teams: Referee: M.
