Mooncoin 0-14
Blacks & Whites 2-7

This close encounter has enabled Mooncoin to take a step closer towards the knock out stages of this competition in a hard fought encounter last Saturday evening. Both sides were up for the battle and the exchanges were hard fought throughout. Mooncoin were quickest out of the blocks with Sean Wall contributing handsomely to the home sides’ tally from both frees and play. However Blacks and Whites were never out of striking distance and their persistence was rewarded before half time when Tom Moloney managed to find the net.

The second period started similarly to the first with the home side making the early running. Mooncoin managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over however the visitors were in no mood to surrender easily. They were rewarded when a defensive mistake allowed Michael Ryan to find the net. The sides continued to battle right to the end with both sides giving their all. Sean Wall decided the issue with a late free enabling Mooncoin to maintain their unbeaten run.

The effort from both sets of players was truly outstanding and while the hurling may have lacked a certain amount of quality both sets of mentors will be happy with their lot. Mooncoin had several eye catching performances none more so than Sean Wall who was impressive at midfield. The defence held firm with Johnny Phelan, Alan Walsh and Dick Mackey performing well. The attack lacked a certain amount of scoring power but Barry Purcell worked hard and was rewarded with some fine scores while Tomas Kearns added to the attack when sprung form the bench.

The visitors will be disappointed with this result and will look back on some missed opportunities as being very costly. Their defence were solid throughout thanks to the work of Pat Hayden and Cathal Ryan, while the midfield pairing worked hard to keep their side moving forward. In attack they had some good opportunities but lacked clinical finishing at times. Tom Moloney was impressive and will be one to look out for in the near future, while Michael Whelan and Niall Kennedy kept the score board ticking over.
