NEWS & READINGS

  • Dennis O'Driscoll has been awarded the Lannan Literary Award for Poetry for his fifth collection, Weather Permitting (Anvil Press) He is the fourth Irish poet to receive this award.
     
  • Antonia Logue has won the Irish Times Literary Award for Fiction for her first novel Shadowbox.  Bloomsbury

  • The Molly Keane Memorial Creative Writing Award 2000 offers £500 for the best short story, max 2000 words.  Closing date: 25th February 2000.

  • LISTOWEL WRITERS WEEK
  • The Kerry Ingredients Book of the Year Award   £5000 for a work of fiction by an Irish author.  Adjudicators are Bruce Arnold and Ita Daly.
  • The Brian MacMahon Short Story Award   £1500 for the winning story (not more than 3000 words).  Entry fee is £5 for each entry.  Adjudicator is David Marcus.
  • Dhuais Bhord na Gaeilge: An Foras Teanga  Duais £500 é seo ar chnuasach beag filíochta nó gearrscéalta (nár foilsíodh mar chnusach go dtí seo) nó ursceál nó saothar drámaíochta neamhfhoilsithe.  Moltóir Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill, taille £5 ar gach iontráil.
  • Eamon Keane Full Length Play   Adjudicator Michael Twomey.  One act plays are not eligible, plays submitted should be suitable for stage presentation.  Entry fee is £10 with every entry submitted.  (Plays returned only if submitted with SAE.)
    Poetry Competition   Adjudicated by Thomas McCarthy.  £500 for the best single poem, and £500 for the best small collection (6 - 12 poems) plus printing and publication of a slim volume to be launched at next year's festival.  (The latter section of the competition is open only to those who have not yet published a first collection.)  Entry fees are £5 for a single poem and £10 for a short collection.
  • Writers' Week Originals Competition  Adjudicated by the Writers' Week Editorial Board, the categories for this competition are: Short Story (max. 1500 words), Humorous Essay (750 words approx), and Short Poems.  The prize fund is £500, entry fee is £5 with each entry submitted.
    Writing in Prisons in Ireland   Prize fund £450.
    Irish Post/Irish Ferries New Writing Competition   Confined to those living outside Ireland; details advertised in 'The Irish Post' in the UK.
  • Kerry County Council Creative Writing Competitions for Youth   Categories: 9 years and under, max 300 words.  12 years and under, max 300 words.  14 years and under, max 300 words.  16 years and under, max 300 words, 18 years and under, max 1000 words.  Prize fund of £1000, entry fee £1 per entry.

  • The King of Laois March Competition   Nóirín Ní Riain, Artist in Residence with Laois Co.
