For the purposes of treatment, wastewater is classified as black or grey. By separating the two at source, overall efficiency is raised by decreasing the loading on the septic tank. Greywater is high volume, low BOD, low pathogen content, and the two types are classified as follows :

In a new-build situation, it is simple to run a second soil-pipe taking greywater direct to the reed bed. When a composting toilet is acceptable, the greywater reed bed system will also need a combined grease/silt trap to cope with the added loading from kitchen sink and dishwasher.
If you have a garbage disposal unit in the kitchen sink, take out the fuse and compost your kitchen waste or build a Wormery.
