Saturday the 9th of June 2001 the Best of the Best was held in Roadstone Sports and Social Club. A.S.K.O sent a team of 24 Students along to the competition. The students were from Blackrock and Shankill Clubs. There were many different Styles including Kempo, Kickboxing, Karate and Tae-Kwon-Do to name a few. It was great for the students to see the different Forms and sparring styles in action. A.S.K.O did excellent by bringing home 24 awards. The students enjoyed themselves and entered all of the sections which included Kata, team Kata, sparring, team sparring and continous sparring. Even the younger grades got stuck in and tried all the events.

The competition kicked off at 12.00 noon with Ladies and Mens Black Belt point sparring. Ciara, Colette and Anneline were entered in this event. The standard was good with some of the English National Kickboxing team entering. Ciara and Colette were unlucky not to advance futher and Anneline fought well going on to take 2nd place overall.

The Mens Senior Black Belt points section was very hotly contested and unfortunatly it just wasn’t Gavin’s day. In the Junior Brown to Black belt section Philip was just pipped at the post and had to settle for runner-up. Michael fought extremly well in the Blue belt section and secured 3rd place. Shay fought very well but was injured and went out in the first round. There was concilation as he got 1st place in the White to Purple Kata section. Vincent Keating did very well in the brown belt kata section achieving 3rd place. Christopher O'Sullivan did great managing 3rd place in the points sparring brown belt section.

Zia Holly claimed 3rd in the Purple belt junior girls section. The junior category was well represented by a very strong contingency of blue and green belts. L. Martin, J. Martin, Dean Tallant, Daryl Tallant, A. Quinn, H. Caren and E. Carrick. They all fought with great determination and spirit. Aran, Hugh, Eoghan and Daryl managed to advance to 3rd place in their respective sections all taking medals.

It was the first outside competition for Hilary, Jennifer, Aisling, Hazel, Louise, Chris, Adam and Mark. Chris fought very well in the Yellow belt section and was beaten by the person who went on to win the overall section. Adam and Mark fought in the Yellow belt section and enjoyed themselves. Mark Crofton entered the continuous section and came 3rd. The girls not to be outdone by their male conterparts did extremly well. Jennifer, Louise and Aisling were very unlucky missing out by only one point. Hazel took 3rd place in the Junior Orange belt section. Aisling came 4th in the Kata section. Hilary was on top form, she took 2nd in the Yellow belt points, 2nd in Ladies team event and 2nd in the continuous sparring.

We had a huge interest in the continous sections and did fantastic. Hugh Caren and Aran Quinn got 3rd place in the 13 years section. Zia was unlucky to miss out on 3rd place. Christopher Weinmann and Philip Shakespeare had to battle through three hard rounds with very experienced fighters in the continus sparring section for 1st and 2nd place, Chris was the eventual winner after an excellent bout.

Congratulations go out to all who took part in the competition and a big thank you goes out to all the parents who helped with the driving and looking after the kids. Hope you all enjoyed yourselves.
