Oak Tavern

Ferrycarrig – The most scenic area of County Wexford.  Here the banks of the river are covered in heather, wild gorse, white beech and Irish Oak.  The Oak Tavern, established well over 180 years ago is situated in Ferrycarrig and adjacent to the banks of the River Slaney. Ferrycarrig is an attractive and very historical location consisting of numerous archeological and historical features.  The Oak Tavern is one of the local treasures also to be found in Ferrycarrig. Blending in with its historic surroundings the Oak Tavern provides the ideal location for relaxation after traveling back in time at the Heritage Park nearby.

The Oak Tavern is guarded by Ferrycarrig Castle, one of the earliest Norman castles to be built in the country and the first Norman stronghold in Ireland.  The castle, erected by Robert FitzStephen in 1169 and excavations so far, indicate extensive occupation during the 13th century.   The castle presents an ideallic view from the Riverside and Upper Deck restaurants at the Oak Tavern.

An 18th century tower can be found on the south bank of the river overlooking the Oak Tavern.  This tower was erected by relatives and friends of Co. Wexford soldiers who fell in the Crimean War (1854-56).  The Earl of Carlisle, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, laid the first stone at Ferrycarrig in July 1858.  Taking the form of an Irish round tower, it stands 85ft and is located 9ft above ground level. This can also be seen when traveling on the river from the local Marina at the Oak Tavern

The Heritage Park is within a short distance from the Oak Tavern.  Life in Ireland through the ages going back over 9,000 years is portrayed at the Heritage Park and it is well worth a visit. The round tower mentioned above is also an attraction at the Heritage Park.

For those of you more enthusiastic about the river and its beauty, the Oak Tavern Marina is open to all visitors  .   The sun terrace provides an excellent opportunity to absorb the splendour of the river while quenching your thirst from our Traditional Bar.  An extensive menu is available throughout the day with an additional A La Carte menu available in the evening.  The restaurant surroundings are intimate and friendly with views of the River Slaney and Ferrycarrig castle.  Private functions can also be catered for.

The Oak Tavern is definitely the place to visit.
