the planning application for the Community field has been applied for so Cork County Council have promised completition of the water scheme in about 2 weeks time. When completed the remainder of the village tarring can be finished. Concerns about the distance children have to walk from the bus and CIE have been approached. The Community Council are approaching the Bantry Rural Transport Scheme to see if they will extend the service to Goleen.
Goleen GAA September
Mizen Rovers played their under 16 championships gameversus Barryroe at Skibbereen last Sunday. It was a highly exciting match from start to finish with the Mizen side running out losers on a score of 3-6 to 2-5. Scorers for Mizen Rovers were - William Burchill, 1 goal and 1 point; Brian Clark, 1 goal and Derek Barnett, 4 points.

with my mum dad and 2 brothers and sister.we stayed with mrs coughlan (tim
the farmer and mary)she lost a son when we were there, just pushing a car
!!!.very sad but we have had lots of good times.our kids are now grown up
but have been back for holidays.i have just seen on the internet my old buddy
of 40 years is still in his pub the lobster pot.we are going back to see him
and mary and the kids in september.i like to remenis about the old days and

Deidre Cotter was awarded her ITTA 2 Star Award for Table Tennis at a Summer Training Camp in Dunmanway 16-20th July. She was one of 7 who passed the 2 Star Proficiency Test. Also in Table Tennis Owen Kelly (Goleen) was recently elected to Chairman of the National Development Committee. Owen has also nearly completed his Tutor Qualification at the National Coaching and Training Centre in Limerick. 15 sports are represented within the course which includes Ireland's Goal Keeping Coach Packy Bonner.

EDITORIAL
Things don’t appear as gloomy as they did when I last wrote for the Grapevine. The
solidarity of everyone to try and prevent the spread of such a virulent virus  has been impressive, hearing the stories from across the water one can only be thankful we live in a society that pulls together for a common need. It is difficult to predict how the summer will go with so many people trying to decide whether to travel or not and many in the tourist industry are pessimistic over the coming season. The Grapevine has been effected in its own small way as there is very little to report on local clubs and events as so many were cancelled and have yet to be rescheduled. The GAA season has got off to a good start and we will have a full report on the opening games of the season in next month’s issue. I have been sent a lovely message from Eileen and Luigi and I’m sure we send them our congratulations and to the O’Meara family on the birth of David. This leaves me just enough room to wish everyone a very happy Easter, remember chocolate is not just for Easter its for life, so take care!
THE PARISH SHOW 1963.
 When I first moved to West Cork my barn and out houses were full to the brim with
rubbish. I couldn’t understand how so much useless stuff had managed to accumulate. So
I set about clearing all the rubbish so that the buildings would be useable once again. While clearing up boxes and jars and bits of old tractors I found a couple of old Catalogues from the Parish Show in Goleen Organised by the Goleen Guild of Muintir Na Tire. Little did I know that over ten years later I would be part of a new Muintir Na Tire Community Council in Goleen.
The show itself must have been quite an occasion with competitions for just about  everything. There are entries for 11 classes of horses from “Gelding or Filly, 4 years & upwards. Suitable for Agricultural Purposes” to “Cob or Pony, 14.1 Hands or Under.” First Prize was £2; second, 30/-; third 20/-. Cattle had 12 Classes from Milk to Beef and a Perpetual Challenge Cup presented by Aughadown, to the Best Dairy Cow in show. There were 2 classes for sheep, 3 for swine, 3 for turkeys, as well as a further 7 for other poultry. The Bantam Hen class was confined to children under 14 years of age, I don’t have the results but there were entries from John Allen (Toormore), Margaret Attridge
(Caheriverane), Betty Shannon (Gortyowen), Andrew and Richard Barry (Toormore) and Brendan Hamilton (Ballysillagh). I presume Mrs C.Scully (Dunkelly) must have won the Butter competition as she was the only entrant. In the Horticultural Section there were classes for every vegetable you could imagine with competitions for both “Round Potatoes” and “Kidney Potatoes.” There were also classes for other produce honey, cakes, and jams. Can anyone remember whose Swiss Roll was better Ann Harrington’s (Goleen), Pauline Hamilton’s (Ballysillagh) or Kathleen Hodnett’s (Goleen)? Some of the largest entries were for the Country Crafts and Home Industries, with garments made from heavy wool, light wool, embroidery, crochet, tapestry, leather. rugs, socks as well as basketry.Class 109 is my favourite “Miscellaneous Article, Not Included In Above Category.”
There are four categories listed for the trotting races: “Confined to Goleen Parish for horses that never won a prize,” “Confined to the Parishes of Goleen, Schull, Durrus, that never won a 7th Class Race,” “Open to Parishes of Goleen, Durrus and Schull,” and a Donkey Race; “Riders not to exceed 16years.” 5 Shillings to enter and a 1st got £5, 2nd £3 and 3rd £2. TABLE TENNIS
Owen Kelly was recently nominated as one of the National Coaching & Training Centre’s “Coaches Of The Year” in the category of “Developing Talent.” Owen is currently Munster Development Officer & will be the co-ordinator for the UK & Ireland Corporate Games in Limerick in June. Congratulations to Kloe Wood, Eliza Wood & Deirdre Cotter who have been selected for the Junior Munster Team. The Championships were postponed due to the FMD & will be rescheduled.

Mizen Rovers
The AGM of Mizen Rovers was held recently in the Parish Hall. The outgoing Secretary Pat Reidy gave a report on the years activities with all grades showing an improvement in results over previous years. All grades making either a League or Championship final. Unfortunately we didn't have any wins. A very welcome development was the increase of parental support at matches and it is hoped for a further increase in the coming year. As
there was quite a bit of expense incurred during the year some fundraising will be necessary to balance the books. The following are the Officers for the coming year: Chairperson Tom Notter, Vice-Chair Tim Barnett, Secretary Tim Sheehan, Treasurer Ellen Scully, Asst Secretary Joan O' Donovan, Registrar Helene O' Connell, PRO Mary O' Driscoll. Forms for voluntary insurance scheme are available and will be distributed to parents of all players cost £10 per player U-16. Further info from Secretary @35494. It is hoped to organise the Parish League in the latter half of March so keep an eye locally for teams and fixtures.
The adult club begin their League campaign with an away game in Ardfield against St.James on Sunday March 4th. On Sunday March 11th its away to Kilmeen in Rossmore @ u-18 and Junior Leagues. At the time of going to press there are fixtures but check locally for times and venues. It seems that the U-21 round robin will commence in April. Check with Secretary or PRO John Cullinane for updates.
Community Council
The Goleen & District Community Council presented Mizen AFC with £500 in recognition of the achievements of the club this season and to help them with financial situation within the club.
Goleen Table Tennis Club.
The West Cork Schools Cup saw 9 National School teams and 12 Secondary Schools teams. Both Liisigriffin and Goleen National Schools were represented. Lissigriffin finished 4th, Golee A 5th and Goleen B 6th, Lissigriffin players were; Martin Hurley, Deirdre Cotter, Paul Clarke, Daniel O’Driscoll. Goleen players were; Kloe Wood, Patrick Scully, Alice Camier, Eliza Wood, Jenny Kearney, Ronja Bailey. In the Secondary Cup Schull Community College were represented by three first years; James O’Driscoll, Janna Bailey and Barry O’Donovan.
The West Cork Open was held over the weekend of the 10-11th February. A number of
players from the Goleen region played. Eliza Wood won the U10 Girls and puts her No.1 in
Munster. Paul Clarke finished 5th. In the U12 Girls Kloe Wood finished 2nd (Irish Ranked 13), Deirdre Cotter 3rd (IR 31), Eliza Wood 4th (IR 31), Alice Camier 5th and Jenny Kearney 7th. In the U12 Boys Martin Hurley was 10th, Patrick Scully 17th, Daniel O’Driscoll 25th, Paul Clarke 27th. The U14 girls Deirdre Cotter 11th. U14 boys Martin Hurley 15th. Senior Men’s Owen Kelly 5th. Veterans (+40) Kurt Lyndorff 3rd, Richard Gostyn 6th. This was a very good tournament for Goleen players as well as West Cork players. Including Eliza Wood’s U10 title West Cork took the U12 Girls and U14 Girls titles for the first time. Kloe Wood and Deirdre Cotter look set to represent Munster U12 Girls in Dublin later this season.

Thanks to everyone sponsored prizes and bought tickets which made the draw a great success. Despite the major set back with the storm damage, work has since continued and good progress has been made. We would like to thank most sincerely one person who wants to remain anonymous who made a very generous donation towards the repair work necessary after the storm. We would also like to thank Kevin Kennedy who won a voucher for Mary's toy store in Macroom to the value of £150 and who has very kindly donated this to the playgroup. Playschool continues on Wednesday and Friday mornings at Crookhaven sailing club from 10.00am to 1.00pm, and Parent and Toddler on Tuesday morning from 10.30am to 1.00pm. The post of assistant playleader as advertised, has been filled by Judi-Ann Riley; she took up the post after the Christmas holidays and is now attending the NCVA level 2 course in childcare.
Mizen AFC. Reporter A.Jepson
Mizen AFC has experienced differing fortunes in the League and Cup since Christmas. On
St. Stephens Day, in Arctic conditions a creditable 0-0 draw was achieved. This match was
stopped after 70 min, because one of the opposition broke a leg. The next weekend in the
Beamish Cup, Mizen met the conquerors of last season, Castletown Celtic. A strike by
John Cullinane put Mizen ahead at half time. Castletown equalised in the second half
through a brilliant overhead kick. With Mizen growing in strength the game went into
overtime but remained level. On to penalties and after five clinical strikes Mizen finally
prevailed.
The following Sunday saw Mizen put on a poor performance and they were
accordingly beaten 5-3 by Courtmacsherry, not a good omen for the tie against Bunratty
the following weekend.
That game saw Mizen employ a five-man midfield in an attempt to contain Bunratty.
In front of a huge crowd Mizen started brightly. However as the half wore on Bunratty
turned the screw and Robert Cleary put them ahead after a cross from the left. Mizen AFC
came out a different team in the second half and minutes in John Cullinane equalised from
a through ball by Liam O’Connell. With Mizen on top Don Ward stayed forward after a
corner on the hour and from an acute angle he drove an unstoppable shot into the net.
From then on Mizen held their nerve and despite three corners in the last few minutes
Bunratty could find no way through, the defence was excellent throughout, in particular
Philip Eder in goal made some outstanding saves in both halves.
The last weekend in January Mizen gained full points after Skibbereen failed to show
on time. Mizen has an important league match against Castletown to play.

Goleen Table Tennis Club.
The Goleen Table Tennis Club has been closed for over two months now but this has not stopped some players from competing extremely well. At the Cork Junior Interparochial Championships three Goleen players travelled to the event and each won a trophy. Martin Hurley played in both U12 and U14 age groups and finished third in both. Ronja Bailey played very well to get to the final of the U12 Girls where, she was beaten by Irish No.3 Andrea Shorten. Andrea also beat Janna Bailey who made the final of the U14 girls. This was a great achievement for the Goleen Club who had only won one trophy at these Championships.
Three girls also travelled to the AIB Munster Open in Cork. This is the largest and most competitive event on the Irish table tennis calendar. In all West Cork players took 15 top 10 finishes at the Irish rankings. Deirdre Cotter, Kloe Wood and Eliza Wood all finished in the top 10 at U12 level.
The West Cork Schools Cup and the West Cork Open are to be played this month in
Ballydehob. Both Lissagriffin and Goleen National Schools performed very well last year and could do well again this year. The West Cork Open will see events at U10, U12, U14, U17, Senior and Veterans (+40). It is hoped a large number of Goleen players will enter. The tournament is an Official Munster Ranking and will attract players from the whole province.
“Bob & The Beanshoot”
The Goleen Drama Group put on another excellent Panto. The show was put on for three days before Christmas and was great entertainment. The costumes and set surpassed that of last year and there were plenty of laughs and a few goofs! After much Mooing, Magic and Mayhem you will be pleased to know that Bob successfully dealt with Giant, Wife of Giant and Dame Isabelle to end up with his egg, his chicken and some new piping. Rumour has it the next Panto will be a musical version of the Hunchback Of Notre Dame, “The Bells! The Bells!”

A Christmas Message.

Millions of Pounds in huge amounts of currency will be spent on gifts and presents for
Christmas. Some gifts will be expensive and some not; some gifts will be big, others small. But no matter what we receive as a gift will remain only that, a gift, until we accept it and make it part of us. It is important to remember what God gave us on the very first Christmas. It was not gold or silver, it was not something that we wear or hang on a wall. It was a child, a human being. No greater gift could God have given us? No amount of money could ever buy it. But sadly, like a lot of the gifts we will receive this Christmas, once the wrapping paper is removed and the mystery of the gift is revealed, the joy ends and it just becomes another possession. If we accept the gift of Jesus given to us at Christmas, it will change us forever. The surprise and the mystery of the gift will never fade, the joy of being with the gift will never die, and the value of the gift will never diminish, because the greatest gift that anyone of us could receive is the gift of another person.

The 2nd production by the Goleen Drama Group would have already gone ahead by
printing. The dress rehearsal had the usual scene collapsing and blank expressions! The
scenery looks brilliant and the costumes are fabulous darlings! The make up, the sound, the lights, the kids, everything looks great. Now if I can only remember my lines! He’s behind
you! Oh NO he’s not!
AN ALL IRELAND DOUBLE

It’s not very often that an All Ireland title has come to the Parish of Goleen, but in recent weeks, two such titles have made their way to this most South-westerly place. Over the past few years “Fortview House” Owned by Richard and Violet Connell has excelled in
setting high standards in farmhouse accommodation. Four years ago they won the coveted All Ireland title for farmhouse of the year, beating off stiff opposition from the rest of the country. Winning this meant they couldn’t re-enter the Competition for a further four years, but this year they were again eligible to enter. At a Prizegiving Presentation in Dublin on 1st November, Richard and Violet consolidated their number one position by taking the All Ireland title for the second time. The Presentation was made at a reception hosted by the A.I.B. in Dublin. Two weeks later Richard and Violet were back again, this time to the R.D.S. at a reception to represent Munster, the category being “RDS Profitable Farming and
Conservation Award.” There were four provincial winners in this with overall winner being
announced on the night. Quite happy with having the Munster title under their belt they
again came up trumps winning a second All Ireland in as many weeks. All Ireland titles are not easily won and anyone that knows the Connell family can see just how much they deserve their Awards. The hard work and the very high standard they have set themselves, have brought no more than the reward they deserve. In an area that has excelled itself in the field of tourism, “Fortview House” has done the place proud, well done to the Connell family.

were confined to children of the parish attending national school. Children took part in the following events:

The winners will represent the club in the West Cork semi-final in early January on a date to be fixed. The dinner dance has been put back to January 2001 on a date to be agreed with the hotel. 35 card drive as usual on Friday nights in one of the bars in the village check locally for venue. The officers would like to wish all players, supporters and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Goleen Community Playgroup
Thanks to everyone who supported our bring and buy sale in the hall on Sun 26th, despite
the bad weather that week-end there was still a good turn out, and Santa did manage to
arrive. The takings for the day came to £409.58. The cake sale and toy collection last
Sunday 3rd was well supported. The cake sale takings were £108.72. Thanks to everyone
who baked cakes and to everyone who gave in toys for Latvia. The toys have now been
passed on to Henry Ryan in Clonakilty and are being transported to Latvia on Dec. 15th.
Our Christmas draw will take place in The Fastnet Bar on Sat.16th with music by Mike
Ronan. Tickets are on sale at £1 each.
Yuletide Bread and Butter Pudding
Ingredients: 8 slices of yeast fruit brack. 3 oz. butter 4 oz. sweet mincemeat. 2 eggs plus 2 egg yolks. ¾ pint cream. 1 tablespoon caster sugar
Method:
1. Butter the slices of brack. Spread the mincemeat on 4 of the slices.
2. Arrange these in the base of a 1 lr/2 pint capacity buttered ovenproof pie dish. Arrange the other
4 slices, buttered side up, on top.
3. In a jug whisk together the eggs, egg yolks, cream and the sugar.
4. Strain this mixture over the brack slices and press down with the back of a spoon.
5. Allow to soak for 2-3 hours but preferably overnight.
6. Bake in a pre-heated oven 150°C/300°F/Gas Mark 2 for 1 hour approx. until the custard is firm in the centre and the pudding is lightly browned.
7. Serve warm with lightly whipped cream.

The Christmas Light are to be turned on after the Panto performance on Sunday 10th
December. There are plans to have another Candle Light session out at the Mizen to see
the sunset on what many believe to be the last day of the Millennium! Many have
commented on the work being done at the Toormore Cross. Most of the work has now
finished and the Hand Pump is to take its place in the new year. Much thanks has to go to

Work is continuing at the building, and hopefully the roof will soon be completed. Details of upcomming events are as follows: Sunday Dec 3rd there will be a cake sale after 12.00 noon mass in Goleen at the chipper all donations gratefully recieved, also anyone who still wants to hand in toys for latvia can do so on this date. Thanks to every one who supported the toy collection but as the day was so bad, now you have a second chance to contribute to this worthy cause. Goleen Community CARE
One of the flatlets that were built by the Community CARE group has become available. These flatlets were designed especially to cater for the needs of anyone living in the Parish to benefit from living in a more central location. The flatlet caters for one person and is near all the local facilities including the Health Centre. The Goleen Community CARE hopes that the provision of accommodation for suitable applicants will continue to prove as worthwhile as it has done in the past. Ronja Bailey and Eliza Wood took 1st & 2nd in the U10 Girls at the West Cork Junior Rankings in Ballydehob. Paul Clarke picked up a Bronze medal in the U10 Boys. Kloe Wood & Alice Camier finished 2nd & 3rd in the U12 Girls with Martin Hurley the best of the U12 boys in 4th. Martin faired better in the U14 boys with a Bronze medal while Kloe also took Bronze at U14 girls. In the senior rankings Owen Kelly collected Gold & Richard Gostyn put in a good performance finishing inside the top 10. Other results: U12 Girls; 4th Ronja Bailey, 5th Deirdre Cotter. U12 Boys; 7th Paul Clarke, 9th Daniel O’Driscoll. U14 Girls; 4th Deirdre Cotter, 5th Alice Camier, 6th Janna Bailey , 7th Louisa Syrwia. A number of players also passed their ITTA 1 Star & 2 Star Awards these included: 1 Star - Deirdre Cotter, Patrick Scully. 2 Star - Kloe & Eliza Wood, Janna & Ronja Bailey, Alice Camier. There have been a couple of meetings to formalise the Goleen Table Tennis Club. It is likely that Table Tennis will be starting again if not before Christmas soon afterwards. A number of members are attending the Ballydehob Club on Fridays 6.30pm in order to continue training for the West Cork Rankings and Schools Cup in the new year.

The Chairperson Brida Buckley welcomed those present, and asked for a vote of sympathy to be expressed to the family of Cathleen Downey who had given freely of her time in her work with the Parish Hall. It was expressed that there had been lots of activity in the last 15 months and work had been done in regard to the storage heaters, extractor fan and with the new spot lights. The Committee was pleased with the profit of the hall and was managing to pay our way. It was stated that by the Chairperson that, it was the duty of the Committee to maintain and make the hall available, Brida was concerned about rumours in the village and that she was not aware, that the hall had been refused to anyone.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and the Treasurers report confirmed that the
accounts were in good order. The hall had been used for Bingo, Discos, Drama, Active Retirement, St.Joseph's, IFA, Racing Committee, Community Council and ICA as well as other activities. Brida thanked the rest of the committee for their support and for the work in organising and running events.
A Secretaries report was requested from the floor but was not available, it was suggested that a secretaries report would be helpful in future. Questions were asked about the availability of the hall for the Goleen Table Tennis Club and it was explained that storage was not available in the hall for a second table. It was agreed that the in-coming committee would review the application in order to try and facilitate the table tennis in the hall.
The election of officers then took place with Brida Buckley Chairperson, Sheila Lucey
Secretary, Elizabeth Berry and Ellen Scully Treasurer a number of new members were elected to the Committee.
Drama Group
Bob and The Beanshoot has started rehearsals, Oh no it hasn’t, Oh Yes it has! Some of the cast of last years Cinderwelly have shown better sense and gone into hiding (rest homes), the rest however have returned! With Sex changes for Aine O’Regan, the Jester, the Fairy Godmother and an ugly sister! There are a few new faces (fools) who have joined the mayhem but Dinky is keeping his head well down. Performance and Chaos are being handled once again by Murphy & Murphy and the Parish Hall is booked. So if you hear strange animal noises coming from the direction of Kilmoooo.

Development Workshop
The Council appointed planning consultants New Ground Talamh Nua, were invited by the
Community Council to run a Development Workshop in the Parish Hall. It is hoped that
through this and similar meetings around North and West Cork that a framework will be
formed for the full integration of economic, social and environmental policies, this would
enable a development strategy which would cater to the needs of the regions up to the year
2020.
In practical terms we were divided into randomly selected groups and each group
was given a number of tasks around the subjects of employment, culture, services,
education and environment. I took part in one group where we drew a “time line” and
showed aspects of the past, present and future in the areas of services, employment and
cultural. From the building of the Mizen light house in 1905, through to this years
Barleycove Project and onto the development of sport and recreation facilities. It gave a
great opportunity to learn some of the past events and the recalling of memories of those
times, as well as a chance to see so much significant work being done at present in the
village and surrounding area. A huge map we drew marked out all the areas of employment
in the area, this included schools, shops, restaurants, pubs and various other occupations
known by the group. We also made a chart showing the levels of education and the amount
that return to the area at various stages. It was notable that those who were highest
qualified tended to settle away from the area.
At he end of the evening after much discussion within each group, we made a presentation to the other groups on what we had done during the evening. With each presentation a better picture of the past leading to present developments as well as identifying some of the future aspirations of the community. The information will be typed up and put into a presentation which will be returned to the Community Council as well as presented to a planned Development Seminar to be held in the area.
Goleen Table Tennis Club
The club has at present had to close and is trying to relocate. Table Tennis is available in Ballydehob on Fridays 6.30-8.30 pm. £1/junior £2/senior. Kloe Wood recently travelled to Dublin for the Irish Junior Rankings and finished 6th in Ireland at U12Girls. Three other West Cork players won bronze medals in U14Girls, U12Boys and U12Girls & are likely to represent Ireland in 2001. Ballydehob Open Fri 27th Oct: evening. GOLEEN COMMUNITY PLAYGROUP have a vacancy for an assistant playleader. A

Last year when we held our jumble sale we had quite a lot of clothes left, a few weeks late we saw an add in the Friday Ad where Henry Ryan in Clonakilty was looking for babies and children's clothes to be shipped to orphanages and institutions in Latvia. We had 5 large refuse sacks of children's and babies clothes that we were able to give towards this very worthy cause. A few weeks ago we got a letter from Henry Ryan with some photos of the children that benefited from the clothes these can be seen displayed on posters in Goleen. In the letter he said that they need toys. "I asked how many girls needed a doll. He said all 80 of them. None have ever had a doll before." We have decided to have a toy collection on SUNDAY OCTOBER 29TH IN GOLEEN AFTER 12.00 MASS. Please do not give battery operated toys as they will not have the money to buy batteries. As you all can see our builders have worked very hard to have our building now ready for roofing and as you read this hopefully the roof work will be under way
GAA
GAA Carbery senior footballers were beaten in the county final by Nemo Rangers on Sunday Oct 1st. Local clubman John Cullinane was on the panel. He was brought on in the second half when there really was no way back for the team. He played in all the earlier rounds of the championship plus numerous challenge games. His goal against Clonakilty in the replay proved to be the crucial score. We hope he continues to wear the divisional jersey for many more years.
The u-16 footballers are in the final of the championship following their victory over Dunmanus Rovers in the semi-final. This is the first championship final the under age club has qualified for since it was formed. The final scoreline was Mizen Rovers 1-9 Dunmanus Rovers 1-4. Dunmanus scored three early points and the Mizen boys were finding possession very hard to come by. Midway through the first half they registered their first point to make the score three points to one. Then some sloppy defending let their opponents in for a goal. The boys raised their game coming up to half time and registered three points to leave the score at half time Mizen 0-4 Dunmanus 1-3. On the restart Dunmanus scored a point which was to prove their last score as the local boys took control. A goal midway through the half put them in front and they scored four more points to ensure victory. Dunmanus tried to the end but could not breach the Mizen defence.

It is hoped to start the u-13 parish league on Saturday October 14th. The format will be the same as last year with four teams. The four teams will play each other on a league basis with the top two playing in the cup final and the bottom two in the shield final. Again lookout for times and dates of games. The u-14 team have a league playoff against Ilen Og B at home to be played prior to Oct 22nd. The u-12 team will be playing the winners of Colm Og and Kilmeen in the league playoffs probably the last weekend of October. The u-10 team have a game with Dunmaus Rovers on Saturday October 7th at Duach.
October is the month for Scor na nOg so all those wishing to take part should be getting their items together and practising for the local night in the parish hall contact club
officers for details. It is also the month for the county board draw the first draw takes place on last Friday of October.
Fancy That.
"You wouldn't recognise the place!" There was a great turn out for the Fancy Dress on the
opening night of the festival. We were blessed with the fine weather. About 50 children
took part with over 20 adults. There were a lot of local as well as holiday makers entered
and their was a high standard of costumes. John Daniel Sheehan stole the show with a mini
Barleycove Pontoon with "Barleycove Pontoon Kids" on the side very topical! Also in the topical vein the butchers Tim and his assistant as Pat Dunne and Charles Haughy a few "brown envelopes" were passed around and they won the adult section in true fashion! Other great costumes were on show with an unseasonable Christmas Tree (Sarah Camier) and a Green Goleen Gremlin (Eliza Wood) In fact all the costumes on show from the "Ewe
Family" were brilliant with Kurt being wheeled around as a baby in a wheelbarrow, Sheena's back was aching after! A Sheikh "lurked" around the place (John Murphy)
presumable looking to get well oiled.
Goleen & District Festival Sports
The first Goleen Festival Children's sports was a great success, with over 50 children
between the ages of 3 and 13 taking part. There were running races for each group, the
Sack Race was great fun as everyone jumped, rolled and fell. There was lots of cheating in
the Spud & Spoon Race (All in good fun). the 3-Legged race was one by the best
co-ordinated and the Piggy Back Race was open to all ages.
Every child gave their all and have to be congratulated for their sportsmanship. Marian O’Sullivan, Douglas Kennedy and Tracy O’Sullivan were the top 3 contestants winning the most medals. Everybody enjoyed themselves and we look forward to next year with bigger and better prizes and even more contestants.
Goleen Rocks!
Goleen was the place to be on Saturday night with the first ever live open air rock gig the village has seen. Pugwash entertained us with most of their last album Almond Tea as well
as a number of requests. The Beatles, Neil Young and many other hits from the 60’s & 70’s
gave the evening and late into the night a retro feel. The crowd was spread throughout the
village with many taking the opportunity to drink and chat on the street giving a true
Summer festival feel. The band enjoyed themselves enormously and wanted to thank
everyone who helped them set up and especially to Tim Eoin & Derry and the hospitality
of Clearview for looking after them.
Goleen Community Playgroup
Work has started on the new building with the all the foundation work complete and
the floors finished and very soon the block work will be underway. Our fundraising
continues and the most recent event being the bouncing castle at the festival week-end,
which again thanks to your support proved successful bringing in £222 profit. Thanks to
Dermot Sheehan for allowing us to use his car park, to O' Reilly couriers who again
sponsored the delivery of the castle and to Denny O' Meara who sponsored the petrol for
the generator.
Now it's back to playschool and again this year playschool and parent and toddler
sessions will be held at CROOKHAVEN SAILING CLUB. Days, Times and Rates are as
follows:
Parent and Toddler on Tuesday morning from 11.00 am to 1.00pm £2 per session. Parent
and Toddler re-starts on Tuesday September 12th
Playschool on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10.00 am to 1.00pm £2.50 per
session. Playschool re-opens on Wednesday September 13th.

Baby Face.
The Baby show held up at the Goleen Parish Hall over the weekend had 15 entries in the
two sections. The Winner of the Under 18 month section was the gorgeous Lilly Jane, who
was cooked up by Perry and Bill Davis (Green Kettle) and the Winner of the Under 3’s was
Luke Joy who was on holiday with his family from Cork. A fine trophy was presented and
the winners won a framed family portrait as well.

John Cullinane was on the Carbery team that beat Clonakilty in the quarter final of the senior football championship on Sunday Sept 3rd scoring a goal and a point. We wish him all the best in the semi final against Skibbereen to be played on weekend of the 10th.The parish league will commence in the next couple of weeks check locally for times and dates.
Howzat!
Mizen Cricket Club reached the final of the Munster Minor Towns Cup and played a repeat of last year against Clonmel Cricket Club. This time however Mizen put in an excellent performance to turn the tables on Clonmel as they dominated the game from the first to last ball. An opening partnership between Owen Kelly and Nick Addey saw 70 on the board with both players scoring over 30. Ritchie Hudson and Robin Willis put on a further 70. The Mizen were finally out after reaching 230 runs in 45 overs. With the accurate bowling of Robin Willis and Charlie Fisher and the other Mizen bowlers Clonmel were scuttled out for around 100 runs. The Munster Minor Towns Cup was presented to the club by the U.C.C. Cricket Club President and the Munster Cricket Union Secretary after the match at UCC. This is the first major trophy Mizen has won and there were major celebrations all round. This also brings the season to a finish with Mizen finishing a very good 4th in the League.

U12 Silver Martin Hurley, Kloe Wood, Bronze Janna Bailey. U17 Bronze Brian Clarke.

Camp where they received coaching from the No.1 Senior in Ireland Brian Fitzgerald and No.1 Junior Mark White as well as Irish No.6 Louise Long at top Munster Veteran Dan Foley. The
Goleen Club in only 1 year have become one of the leading clubs in West Cork with 3
representatives on the Munster Team. the first West Cork Ranking will be confirmed this month.
Two Hot Rod Drivers Leading The Class
Yet another consistent days racing at Grancore Clonakilty for the Goleen based drivers. Two seconds were obtained by Justin Doody which keeps him in the lead of the Class 5 Championship, which he has been helped to achieve by sponsors Denny O’Meara’s Bar & O’Driscoll Motors. Patrick Little of the Dermot Sheehan Racing Team achieved a 1st and 2nd placed finishes. This was only the third 2nd place finish all the others being wins. This places Patrick firmly at the top of the Class 1 Championship by over 100 points. He is also in a very strong position for the Overall Club Championship where he finished 2nd in 1999.
A Community Pulling Together!
The festival tug of war was held on Sunday afternoon in the car park and drew a large
attendance. Each of the eight community council areas put up a team. Referee for the day
was Gerard Donovan from Rossmore.
Teams of eight and the best of three pulls. The quarter final drawl made at the start
was as follows: B v G, C v D, E v A, and F v H. In the first contest B beat G, then C beat
D, E beat A and H beat F all contests ending 2-0. This had the semi final pairings as follows B v C and H v A. C beat B 2-0 and A beat H 2-1. The final between A and C went to three pulls and after a titanic struggle area A won 2-1. The Perpetual Trophy sponsored by John O’ Donoghue Windows was presented by the sponsor to the Champions. The winners and
runners-up medals were presented by the referee at the end of the event. The organisers
would like to thank Tom Jermyn for his assistance and for supplying the rope and
contacting the referee.
7 A-Side Soccer
Seven pubs entered teams in the 7 aside soccer. It was played in a knockout system in field opposite Herons Cove. Draw as follows: Lobster Pot v Denny O’ Mearas, Billy O’ Sullivans v Crookhaven Inn, Nottages v Fastnet, Normas a bye. The 1/4 finals were played on Thursday evening and Saturday morning. Games were 15 minutes aside and 5 minutes extra time if necessary. The first game between Lobster Pot and Denny O’ Mearas was level after extra time with O’ Mearas winning on penalties. The second game Fastnet v Nottages was won by Fastnet 4-3. On Saturday morning O’ Sullivans beat Crookhaven Inn on penalties. This left semi final pairings as follows O’ Mearas v O’Sullivans and Fastnet v Normas. O’ Mearas beat O’ Sullivans 2-1 and Normas beat Fastnet 1-0. The final was played on Sunday after the tug of war. This game was another close affair the scoreline reading 1-1 after extra time. In the penalty shootout the first five penalties were missed but Normas scored their last three to win. Referee Donal O’ Driscoll presented trophy and medals to winners and runners up at the end.

Barley Cove Project launched
On Wednesday the 26th July, the Chairman of Cork County Council, Western Committee,
Councillor M.McCarthy officially launched the council’s project for the conservation,
management and development of the sand dunes area in Barley Cove.
The project began in 1993 when the council initiated the compulsory purchase
process to acquire the sand dunes area of approx. 100 acres. The dunes themselves, along
with the delicate ecosystems that they support, were in danger of being destroyed largely as a result of unrestricted access especially by its over use for camping and caravan parking.
Having acquired the property the council, with the assistance of Dúchas, the heritage
service, put in place a visitor management strategy for the dunes. Financial support for the venture was forthcoming from the European Union and the National Government through
the operational programme for tourism administered by Bórd Fáilte.
The total cost of the project to date, excluding land acquisition, is around £300,000
of which £150,000 was provided from the tourism operational programme with the balance
coming from the council’s own resources. The development to date consists of the
provision of public toilet facilities and a water supply to the beach and construction of a boardwalk and pontoon to allow easy access to the beach at all phases of the tide the
elderly, disabled and young children.
The boardwalk will have the effect of channelling pedestrians traffic in a way that
will minimise the environmental impact of the movement of people through the dunes. A
series of information boards have also been provided to allow people to see for themselves
details of the extensive flora and fauna that exist in the dunes.
In its approach to this project, the council has worked very closely with the local
community and Dúchas in devising and implementing a long term visitor management
strategy which can only be for the long term benefit of the area both environmentally and
economically.
The opening was also attended by a number of councillors and officials, unfortunately
the weather was not at its best. A fine reception was held at Heron’s Cove in Goleen for
those who attended.

All Things Bouncy For The Playgroup
Goleen Community Playgroup Ltd. would like to thank all those who made the bouncing
castle week-end a success. After a disappointing start on Saturday with the weather,
Sunday proved to be very successful. An enjoyable day was had by every one. We would
like to thank all the sponsors without whom the day would not be possible. Dermot

The Millennium Book
The Community Council launched the idea for the Millennium Book at the beginning of the year with the Millennium Last light Photo Competition. It is proposed that some of these
may well feature in the finished record of the year of the millennium throughout the district.
It is hoped that there will be photographs of as many families living within the region as
possible, showing a record of our lives for future generations. If you would like yourself
our your family included in this book you can either submit your photograph to your
Community Councillor or we will arrange a photo to be taken. Please support this unique
opportunity to make a record of this historic period for the future.
The Spud Fayre
There have been major moves this month nailing down the details for the first ever Goleen
District Spud Fayre! The date has had to be changed to accommodate the running of the
event and this means we will be holding the Fayre over the third weekend in August.
Moves have been made to organise an Inter pub football Tournament. (Euro 2000 eat your
heart out!), a tug-of-war tournament, a recipe competition, a Fancy Dress Parade and a
barbecue with live music planned there should be enough for everyone to do! More details
will be posted when things are confirmed. If anyone would like to help with the organising
just contact your Community Councillor.
Water Update.
Some provisional work on the water system is due to begin shortly. A new pump is to be
fitted for the summer to help increase the flow and pressure. A survey has gone ahead to
allow the boring of a new well that will help to subsides the existing water supply. There
are also plans to divert a nearby stream into the reservoir, these plans however will not be in place for this summer but it is hoped they will go ahead in the autumn.

The season has now come to an end after Ilen Celtic knocked the lads out of the Division
1 Semi final with a goal at the very last minute. The final score was 2-3 to Ilen.
LOCAL GIRLS TO PLAY FOR MUNSTER.
A follow up on last months article on Kloe wood being selected to Munster. Deirdre Cotter
was selected after an injury prevented one of the U12 Team from playing. Deirdre and Kloe
joined Andrea shorten(Kinneigh) & Jackie Rea(Cork) & was presented with a bronze
medal for their performance. The Munster Team second overall, Leinster took 1st place.
ROAD SIGN COMPETITION
The Community Council in conjunction with the Tidy Towns Committee are asking for
submissions to design a new Goleen Sign at the entrance to the village. The main sign will
be located at the entrance to the village by the bridge and Grotto. Please submit your
design to your local councillor by July 1st for inclusion in the competition. It is hoped to include a Keep Goleen Tidy, within the design.
THE GREAT POKEMON INVASION
There were Pokemons galore around 5 of the pubs in the district on Easter Sunday to raise
money for local community projects. The Community Council would like to thank all the
publicans for their support and all of you who helped raise £750 for these projects. The

CORK PLACENAME SURVEY
The Cork Placename Survey Organisation has written to the Community Council appealing
for information on names of fields rocks, streams etc. This is a county wide project and the Council will be co-ordinating the efforts of the survey within the area. Anyone with special interest in this area can contact Mary O’Callaghan.
Credit Union
The Community council is contacting the Credit Union to see if they would be interested in
opening a branch within the Goleen District.

Mizen A.F.C.
The soccer team had a good win 2-0 against Drinagh on Sunday 23rd at the Town Park in the 1/4 final of the division 1 cup. The team will turn out against Ilen Celtic in the 1/2 final on Friday 28th.
Last Light Competition
Mizen tourism Co-Op and the Community Council, ran a photo competition for a camera, the photos have ben on display at the Tele Cottage in the village. The competition was judged by Ted O'Brien and the results are below. All the runners up will receive a certificate of merit:

Mizen Rovers U14 Win
On 22nd April the U14 GAA team lined up against Ilen Og at Duach. The Goleen team was in fine spirits after the great win earlier in the week by the U12 team. With the wind against them
in the first half it was tough going, but the team showed great spirit keeping in touch with some good defensive work. With the wind at their backs during the second half Goleen scored some good goals. It was a very tough match with excellent performances from many players in inclement conditions. At one stage the Ilen Og team rallied and pulled ahead with two fine goals. When Brian Clarke was sent to the line for an off the ball incident it appeared that their efforts would count for nothing but the team rallied and scored a late goal which put them in front. When the final whistle sounded their was much celebration for this much deserved victory. The final score was 5-3 to 4-7.
Litter Free Roadsides.
Litter Free Roadsides is an environmental protection competition co-ordinated as a joint
venture by the Cork County Federation of Muintir na Tire and Cork Co.Council. The Community
Council entered this competion last year and finished well placed in our catagory.
The Community Council has entered this competition along with the Tidy Towns and our first
litter collection of the campaign will be held at 2.00 pm on Friday 21st April anyone who
would like to help meet in the village at this time.
Sponsored Walk
Mary Donovan, Ballysallagh, goleen, took part in a sponsored walk from Bantry to Kilcrohane,
over the Goat's path, on Sat. 8th april. This was organised by Dr.Denis Cotter and the Bantry
publicans for the Cork Cancer Units. Mary raised in excess of £1,700 in sponsorship.
Anybody else who would like to make a contribution should contact Mary and she will forward
all contributions to the fund.
THE POKEMON INVASION
Two Pokemon prizes in each of the 5 pubs - £1 a line.
Draw on Easter Sunday starting in one pub at 10 and ending in the last pub at 11.30pm. Draw in aid of the Community Council.
Table Tennis:
Congratulations to Kloe Wood and Deirdre Cotter on them receiving Bronze medals at the
Junior Interprovincial Championships. The team narrowly missed out on the silver when
they lost 5-4 to Ulster. Kloe nearly caused the upset of the day when she took the first
set against last year's Irish No.3 Orna Smith from Ulster. Orna managed to win the second
set 21-19 and after a tense third set, she also took the third 21-19. this is a siggnificant
result for Kloe who has been playing less than a year. For more information on table tennis

Public Meeting
A Public Meeting took place at the Parish Hall on Tuesday 4th April. The Draft
Development Plan for the Goleen and District Area was discussed and there was a good
attendance. A couple of points on additions to the road development are to be added. The
Cork County Development Strategy was also discussed and the proportion of holiday accomodation to
full time residential housing was mentioned. ammendments to the draft document are to be made and the
final report will be sent to the County Council. the next Community council meeting was set for the 18th April, 9,30pm.
Goleen Drama Group Meeting April 5th at Denny O'Meara's, Goleen. To discus ideas for another production. All welcome.
Local Girl To Play For Munster.
Kloe Wood has become the first ever Goleen Table Tennis Club Junior to be selected for the
Munster Team at the Junior Interprovincial Championships, to be held at U.C.C. Cork on
April 15th. The Munster team will have four West Cork representatives, the team are the title holders
at the moment as Munster won the title for the first time in their history last season.
Munster are currently favourites to retain the title but it will be fiercely competitive
with a strong Leinster squad this year. Kloe will play at Under 12 level the team will be captained
again by local coach Owen Kelly. The next West Cork Rankings takes place on Saturday 8th at Kinneigh TTC.
The First A.G.M. of the Goleen and District Community Council was held on March 21st.
Following a very successful year for the council the secretary gave a report of the
projects taken on board. ie. The Playground. Barleycove Beach, Planning and Development,
Mains Water Supply, Newsletter, Christmas Tree and Millennium Project, Art and Craft Courses
and Drame Group. New Officers are: Cahair Tim Sheehan, Secretary Mary O'Callaghan, Treasurer
Irene Cullinane, PRO Gerard Donovan, Vice Chair Anthony O'Callaghan, Asst. Seretary Theresa
Laycock.

were all confirmed on Monday March 26th by Bishop Buckley with Rev Hugh McLaughlin, Fr Nolan, Fr Crowley and Fr Spillane.
Claire O'Donovan, Elaine O'Donovan, Tony McEntaggert, Catherine O'Callaghan, Derek Barnett,
Diarmund O'Callaghan, Breda O'Callaghan, Brid O'Driscoll, Catherine O'Mahony, Michael
O'Callaghan, Meadbh Wilson and Kevin O'Regan were all confirmed from the eastern side of the Goleen Parish.
The Cork School of Music Recital of Prize Winners 2000,
will take place at Bantry House on Sunday 2nd April at 8 pm.
Mizen Archaelogy and Historical Society are having their club dinner on April 14th,
at 8 pm in the East End Hotel. the 8yth edition of the journal will be launched at the dinner. Anyone wishing to attend

Goleen & District Community Council A.G.M.
The first annual Community Council A.G.M. is to take place on the 21st of March at The
Goleen Parish Hall at 9.00 p.m. This is an open meeting that anyone can attend. The new
officers are to be elected by the Councillors and reports are to be made by the existing
Executive. A draft Development Strategy, document is to be produced and people
attending will get an opportunity to make suggestions for the final draft. If you have a
concern in your area that you would like included please contact myself (028-35371) or
any Community Councillor.
Goleen Water
A delegation from the Community Council had a very successful meeting recently with
Mr.Ted Murphy, Senior Engineer for Cork County Council, at his office in Skibbereen. As
a result of a survey conducted by the Community Council last August, it was discovered
that up to thirty homes in the area were having water problems. Varying from poor
pressure to no water day or night, for over one month it was felt a priority for the
Community Council to act.Mr Murphy has now given a commitment to the Community
council that the County council are going to replace the old asbestos pipe with a new
plastic pipe before the end of the year. This will increase the flow of water from the filter
beds to the village and in turn increase the pressure to the outlying problem areas. Mr
Murphy also informed the delegation that the County Council are looking at alternative
sources in the immediate area to supplement the lake, in case the demand exceeds the
supply in the existing lake.
CONFIRMATION
The Confirmation will take place in St Patrick's church, Goleen on Monday March 20th.
this is a very important day for the children receiving the sacrament, their parents, relatives
and friends. As this is an occasion that only takes place once every two years it is important
that everyone make a special effort to attend the ceremony and make it a memorable day
for the children involved.
Dunmanus Pier
There have been calls from the Dunmanus Fisherman's Association and the Goleen and District Community Council
to raise the pier by a height of at least two feet at the pier-head and that the sea walls
be straightened, refaced and extended to the west by some 250 feet. The channel also needs
to be cleared and areas deepened. The pier would also benefit from a slip way so that the
Irish Coast Guard Service could launch a rescue boat from this pier
Last Sunset Competition
The 25th of March is the deadline for entries in the Mizen Last Light Photographic
Competition. Entries are to Ted O'Brien, Goleen. First prize is an Advantix camera, value.
Births, Deaths and Marriages.
The death took place at his residence in Durrus of Christy O'Driscoll, Christy was from Kilthomane
and is survived by his sisters, nephews and nieces.
The marriage took place on Saturday 4th March in St.Finbarr's Church, Gougane Barra of
Nora O'Regan, Castlepoint, Schull to Jerry Lordan of Ahiohill, Ballinscarthy. the reception was held in the Parkway Hotel, Dunmanway.
