THE FIELD
In 1984 after all the years of asking farmers
all over the parish for a loan of a field, we finally purchased a field in
Buncarrig from the late Jimmy Newport who did a great amount of work for the
Club while Chairman in the 60’s.
A Development Committee with Jimmy
Devereux (Chairman), Nick Devereux
(Treasurer), Four Trustees – Jimmy Devereux, Ray Doyle, Sean & Nick
Devereux were appointed.
Making money was always top of the agenda and
many ways were tried. However, the
greatest money-spinner of all was the Mayoral Election. The candidates were Ronnie Doyle, Paddy
Scallan R.I.P. Bunargate and Declan Murphy.
Each had their group of workers and there was
hardly a village or pub in the County that some of the candidates did not
visit. Each pound collected
represented a vote and nobody knew until the very last night what each had made. John Long (Bank of Ireland, Rosslare)
acted as Treasurer for the candidates.
Keegans was packed the night John Long declared Paddy Scallan elected –
around £21,000 was collected in total.
The Club will always be grateful to all the workers and subscribers of
that great ‘campaign’ which lasted around ten weeks “sorry no names incase someone is left out”.
Dressing rooms were added in 92 – 93 with
showers and toilets – a far cry from togging out at the side of the pitch.
2001 saw us develop our pitch further, with the
addition of nets behind the goal, a new drive, a hurling wall, which was
sponsored mainly by the people of the parish and also the erection of railings
around the pitch. Dugouts were also
added.
