Luke Kelly of The Dubliners is without doubt one of the best singers to come out of Ireland. He has inspired and entertained many people and over 20 years after his untimely death in 1984 still continues to do so which is testimony to his endurance. I personally can claim that he was my biggest influence when I started listening and playing folk music. Throughout my musical career, I have had many people tell their stories and their admiration for this guy. One thing that stands out is that I have never heard anyone suggest that they didn't like his music which is unusual because I have often heard of differing views about other artists depending obviously on peoples taste. I  have also met other musicians along the way who were heavily influenced by him and Brian Roebuck now a life long friend, a native of Dublin and living in Manchester is one  such person. I met him through another musical friend Colum Cronin when Brian was visiting West Cork and recording an album at Colums studio. Colum suggested he knew a banjo player with similar taste in music and felt I would contribute positively to the project. We started playing gigs together around West Cork and became life long friend. Brians voice and delivery resmbles Lukes in a respectful way and he master-minded a Luke Kelly Tribute band and I am delighted to be involved. The Tribute band perform occasionally in Ireland and UK and include such great musicians as Dessie Donnelly, Gerry "Banjo" O'Conner,. Mick O'Brien and Marcus Moloney. It is a fitting tribute to this folk legend and more detailed information can be found in the following sites about Luke Kelly Tribute, Brian Roebuck and Brians band "Liffey Street". There is a live Tribute album available and again details can be found in the links below.
