Young People & PoliticsPáirtí an Lucht Oibre

(Statement by Pádraig de Burca, Labour Party) 11/05/99

I would encourage all young people to register and vote - use the postal vote if necessary. If you do not vote you don't really have a right to moan about lack of representation afterwards.

There are many issues effecting young people's everyday lives: there is a lack of quality employment and little or no protection for young workers who are being exploited in many sectors. Hard drugs are a scourge effecting mostly young people but the justice system can sometimes be more interested in raiding dance clubs. There is a lack of resources for youth clubs and projects and people can not even get home from town at night due to the lack of public transport. Children are regularly admitted to adult wards in hospitals and student grants are miserly. Young people care about the rise in racism and they need to be represented on the new cross border bodies. I could go on.

The political system must become more responsive to young people's needs but things will not change if people don't vote for change. Politics needs a splash of youth energy but people get the politicians they deserve. Young people voting in numbers for change could make the vital difference.
