European Conference on Reading

Dublin – July 1-4, 2001

Welcome

The Reading Association of Ireland is proud to host the 12th European Conference on Reading – the first of the new millennium – and looks forward to welcoming delegates from all over Europe and the rest of the world to Dublin in July 2001. The organisers plan to develop a programme that reflects a wide range of topics and issues related to the Conference theme – Other Ways of Seeing: Diversity in Language and Literacy. It is only through exploring, reflecting upon and integrating a variety of ideas and findings that we can come to a deeper understanding of the processes involved in language and literacy, and how to apply them in practical and policy-orientated contexts at all levels of education. We welcome researchers, teachers, teacher-educators, librarians, writers, publishers – all of you who are interested in language and literacy – to Dublin for the Conference. Céad Míle Fáilte Romhaibh! (One hundred thousand welcomes!).

The Conference Organisers

The 12th European Conference on Reading  is organised by the International Development in Europe Committee of the International Reading Association, in co-operation with the Reading Association of Ireland.

The Reading Association of Ireland  (RAI), a national affiliate of the International Reading Association, was established in 1975. Its main aims are to stimulate and promote interest in literacy, to organise Conferences and Workshops related to literacy development, and to disseminate knowledge helpful to the solution of literacy problems. In addition to holding an Annual Conference each year in September and a seminar in March of each year, RAI has hosted the Ninth World Congress on Reading (1982), the Fourth European Conference on Reading (1985), and the First International Youth Congress on World Peace through Literacy (1987). The Reading association of Ireland looks forward to hosting the 12th European Conference on Reading in 2001.

The Conference Programme Committee, which will evaluate paper proposals, consists of members of the International Development in Europe Committee of the International Reading Association, the Reading Association of Ireland, and the academic community in Ireland.
