Rust.  Pieces: 500.  Size: 19” x 19”.  01 The image of the bird is a reflection of the thoughts, fantasies and symbols which dwell in the upper regions: flights of fancy.   Birds act like messengers between man and the cosmos in which s/he dwells.   The qualities of birds, bright, golden, (eagle or falcon gods) ornithological symbolism. Tweedledum and Tweedledee.   Birds with human heads, such as the Ba-soul in Egypt or the Harpies in Greece and the parrot, which has a human voice.   Only recently has the mind been conceived as part of the body - in the past it was envisaged as extending far beyond corporeal confines, and assumed to survive quite independently.   Icarus, the bird man - Phoenix - ideas and ideals have to be brought down to earth before they can be incorporated in life.   Even the most inspired thoughts are vacuous until they have some influence on the pattern of events.   Otherwise precious glimpses of the realms of the unconscious slip away elusively.   Embodiments of the immaterial.   Heavenly beings with wings: angels, cupids.   In some mythologies they live in the ‘world tree’ and are connected with divine powers. 

                                         

02 Dove: the attribute of the ‘Love Goddess’ as well as the ‘Holy Spirit’. 

03 Goose: the condition of ecstasy.   This was the prehistoric symbol of the trance of the spiritual leader or Shaman.   “Goosey, goosey gander, who wanders upstairs and takes a man by the left leg and throws him downstairs, because he would not say his prayers”.   In Egypt, the goose laid the Cosmic Egg, as in later folklore it was to lay the golden egg: the symbol of the Earth Mother, the womb of the cosmos.

05 Pelican: self-sacrifice - feeds its young from its own breast.
