French: initiative - une initiative.   

Having the initiative means that your opponent is on the run.   You have been making moves that carry immediate or subtle threats, control the action and flow of the game and your opponent has been forced on the defensive.   If you can keep up the initiative with accurate play, and if you do not allow your opponent any breathing space (cutting off h/er oxygen supply) in which to launch a counter-offensive, you will have a good chance of winning the game.   What usually happens during a game is that the initiative passes back and forth as players err.
