MYTHOLOGY EGYPTIAN

Egyptian myth is full of pristine archetypal symbols.  They had the conviction that the mind can penetrate beyond appearances to reality.   Their cult of the dead reveals their familiarity with the working of the unconscious soul, expressed in symbolic terms.  Myth, ritual and the visual arts all combine to express symbolic language.   Their temples were images of the cosmos in the form of the primordial mound.   The eye of Atum - the eye of consciousness.   The ‘Word’ is another symbol for the creative idea that brings form and order into matter.   The KIs and the rulers of the provinces were sons of or incarnations of the Gods over the same regions, which emphasized the connection between the religious sphere and the human.    Many of the main foundations of religious ideas (that persist to this day) were already laid in Ancient Egypt, probably as early as the Pyramid Age.   In the Old Kingdom hopes of an afterlife were focused on the KI.   The dead were thought to enter heaven as one of the stars or as a member of the crew of Re’s solar boat.    On death the deceased came before Osiris and 42 judges to plead their innocence and have their hearts balanced against Maat.   The Egyptian desert has been called ‘the place of the weighing of the heart,’ (Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness).   Symbol of ancient glorified mysteries ie, pyramid building (mysteries encoded in numbers, alchemy, astrology etc).   Jackal: Egyptian god of the dead (roves about cemeteries and feeds on corpses).

MYTHOLOGY GREEK

CubaSymbolism reflects the anatomy of the psyche and its relationship with the outside forces of nature.  The meaning of each symbol depends on the context.   The relationship of the parts is often more significant than the isolated symbol, because such relations are a vital and integral part of life.   And besides the symbol often cannot be understood in isolation because its meaning varies according to the context.   The great value of Greek myth, to anyone trying to understand the working of the psyche, is the extent of it.   It has been passed down more or less intact.  All the parts are woven, interwoven and sometimes, in later strands of tradition, rewoven to form complete patterns that reflect the patterns of the psyche and the patterns of life.

01 Aphrodite, is the secret lover of the God of War, Ares, and on her dark side is partly responsible for the Trojan war.

02 Mount Olympus/Tartarus: where a millstone could fall for nine days before it struck bottom.

03 Compressed symbols like the serpent and the Pole of the God Hermes.

04 Gods of Olympus: Zeus/Hera, Athene/Hephaestus, Apollo/Dionysus, Demeter/Peresphone, Eros, Hermes (who bears the serpent/pole), Pan, Saturn for Cronus.

05 Chiron is distinguished among the centaurs as being far more conscious, more civilized.  Living in a cave, with an animal body, he is also an educator.   The germs of light and of recovery are sometimes discovered in the darkest recesses of nature.

06 The KI is mediator between the individual and the group.

Greek mythology is as familiar to us as many Bible stories and has influenced European literature and art.

MYTHOLOGY MESOPOTAMIAN

The roots of symbolism may lie here.  The Zodiac may be the prototype symbolic system.  Symbolism is itself a synthesis of human experience.  There is a distinct possibility that the mythology of the world remains related at source.

MYTHOLOGY ROMAN

Pluto and Proserpina (Hades and Persephone).   Naming is always a symbol of becoming conscious of the exact nature of whatever is named.   Rumpel is discovered singing his name in the forest.

MYTHOLOGY OF THE CELESTIAL CONSTELLATIONS

As viewed from the earth, the sky appears as a huge hemispherical vault covering the flat circular land, its bottom rim resting on the horizon.  Astronomers separate the east and west sides of the celestial firmament by the meridian, an imaginary line running overhead from north to south.   The vault of heaven is therefore an astronomical border which divides the sky.    The associations of stars we call constellations are mythological creations.   They are considered as a convenient way to remember ‘groups’ of star patterns.    Stars are like diamond like points of light and reveal to the careful observer a rich celestial palette.    The origins of the names of most stars and constellations are lost in the mists of our prehistory.   Shakespeare referred to the stars as ‘night’s candles’.   There are a total of 88 constellations and no new ones have been added since the 18th century.   The process of defining formal boundaries was completed in 1930 by the IAU (International Astronomical Union).  The result is like a jig-saw puzzle of the sky.   The brightest star in a group is called its ‘lucida’ (Alpha, Beta etc).   In their names we find the history and creative imagination of the human race.   Our ancestors lived mainly in the open, out under the starry sky.   Even today, the most jaded urban dweller can be unexpectedly moved by a clear night studded with thousands of tiny stars that will take his/her breadth away.  You will be overpowered by the scale - so vast and far away that your own insignificance becomes undeniable.   The heavens dwarf and humble us.   We do not know the name of the person who first noticed that planets were different to stars.   Five points of light were different from the others and move strangely over a period of months and years.   With the Sun and Moon there are seven wandering bodies in all.  The ancients named them after the gods.  Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.   Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered recently and added to this pantheon.   These remote worlds are no longer points in the sky but destinations for our spacecraft, modern argonauts and the imaginations of Wernher von Braun, Hermann Oberth, Neil Armstrong and Yuri Gargarin to name a few of those who will be remembered as the first to put their signature amongst the stars.   The constellations have been the mover of man’s imagination and science for millennia - our hopes and dreams of tomorrow - the courtroom of the gods, executed with poetic elegance and grandeur.    It is impossible to explain the effect of the heavens on the human mind.   Many times I have stood gazing and each time I am awed, humbled and exhilarated by the splendour of the heavens from a dark location - a kaleidoscope of stars.   Genesis 1:14 says “Let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years”.   Amos 1:8 “Seek him that maketh the Pleiades and Orion”.

Stars are used symbolically on the standards of many sovereign states.    George Washington’s flag was the first national flag to fly five-pointed stars, a symbol that has its origin in Ancient Egypt.   Burundi displays a triple-star on its flag.   Tennessee also has three stars on its flag (being the 3rd to acquire statehood after the original 13 had joined).   The stars on the flag of Oklahoma are equal-armed crosses, a traditional star symbol of North American Indians.   Alaska (northernmost American state), displays the Big Dipper.   Maine’s flag sports the North Star and the legend ‘Dirigo’ meaning ‘I direct’.   Minnesota uses the French motto ‘L’Etoile du Nord’ (North Star State).   Many Southern Hemisphere nations use Crux, the Cross on their flags (Brazil, Papua New Guinea, Western Samoa, Australia, New Zealand etc).   The Southern Cross also appears on Australian postage stamps.   Uzbekistan uses 12 stars to signify the twelve months of the year.   Our solar system has been explored by the Russian Vostok, Voskhod, Soyuz, Salyut, Mir and Buran craft and also by the American Gemini, Apollo and shuttle vehicles.   There is nothing like Saturn’s rings or a great star cloud in the Milky Way to remind us of our origins, our destiny and our significance in the universe.   You do not need to spend a fortune on equipment - a pair of binoculars, plus a little common sense, and the thrill of astronomy awaits you!   From our Earth island you can observe the constellations (listed individually in this dictionary) through binoculars or a telescope.
