plan 2 go: what to pack
When packing for your big trip, remember always: less is better. Think about everything you want to take, and discard anything that isn't an absolute necessity - you'll be sorry when you end up walking for hours in dead heat with your complete personal belongings on your back.
As a guide, here are some suggestions:

Pack:
  • backpack
  • day pack
  • 2 small locks
  • bungee cord (for wrapping around door and rack on trains)
  • sleeping sheet (thin and light)
  • a large (light weight) nylon stuff sack to put back pack in during flight, it protects the straps and cords from being damaged by luggage handlers
  • a water bottle
  • an extra buckle for the straps on your backpack

Documents:

  • passport & visas
  • health card
  • hostel card
  • driver's license (even though you're not driving, is used for security deposit on keys, etc.)

Health:

  • 1st aid kit with bandaids, tape, and antibiotic ointment, antacid, cold medicine, vitamin C
  • anti-diarrhoea and anti-nausea tablets
  • extra pair of prescription glasses
  • toothpaste, brush, floss
  • nail clippers, tweezers
  • ear plugs
  • tissues, Q-tips
  • suntan/sunburn lotion
  • razor
  • hand wipes
  • shampoo/conditioner
  • hair ties
  • fem stuff

Equipment:
  • compass
  • binoculars (small pair for seeing frescos)
  • small light
  • pocket knife
  • screwdriver, corkscrew and bottle opener might come in handy
  • eating utensil cup
  • small alarm clock for those early morning flights
  • torch, along with spare batteries
  • camera & film
  • recorder & tapes (audio tapes are great to send home)
  • batteries (camera, recorder)
  • small bag of detergent
  • small sewing kit
  • a referee's whistle is a great item for a woman to have with her
  • pen, paper, journal
  • plastic bags (sandwich size, ziplock) - separate currencies, leaking items etc
  • guidebook
  • books to read
  • language reference

Clothing:

  • windbreaker/raincoat
  • two pairs of pants (jeans/a pair of kacky pants)
  • six pairs of socks
  • 6 pairs of underwear
  • three bras
  • two pairs of shoes (hiking boots/tennis shoes)
  • a pair of light cheap thongs (need to dry quick on the pack)
  • 2 T-shirts (you will buy more as needed)
  • one sweater
  • gloves
  • ear/headband or hat
  • 2 pair shorts
  • a bandana comes in handy lots of ways
  • plastic bags to keep wet or dirty clothes away from your other luggage
