Some of your options for working while travelling include:

• Volunteer work abroad: can be most rewarding (in the non-financial sense) - enquire at your local missions representative society, or charity. Be aware that often you will need to organise your own sponsorship money to travel, then your food and board will be taken care of.
• Summer Jobs abroad: a convenient way to make money, friends and see the world. If you intend to make some money for yourself, sign up with your college summer work scheme, or organise to work with a summer camp organisation. The J1 Visa is a popular scheme for students wishing to work in America during the summer months. There is a program for American students wishing to visit Europe also.
• Work Down Under: becoming very popular, but restricted to certain qualifying countries is the Australian Working Holiday Visa. This allows you to spend a year in Australia, working for up to three months at a time to fund your travelling. See our special feature for more information.

  • start busking! Learn guitar, sing a song, tell jokes. Pick popular tourist spots and you may start making money for your talent (or lack of!)
  • fruit picking: get paid at the end of each day for this hard, hot work, which is found in many places. Check out student noticeboards or travel centres or hostels for advertisements
  • sell something: how many times have you paid over the odds for a bottle of water or a soft drink? Well, why don't you try the same trick? Buy a large quantity, a bucket of ice and start selling on a hot day!
