My home of animals.

I love animals, and I would like to be a vet. I have 3 pets, a dog, a cat and a rabbit.

Shadow is a black dog with a white chest. He is very friendly with the cat and the rabbit. He enjoys swimming, playing, sleeping and going for walks.

Slippers is a black cat with a white chest and white paws. He loves to play with the dog but dislikes the rabbit. He enjoys playing, hunting, resting and he never seems to stop purring.

Dutchess is a white rabbit with black spots. She gets on well with the dog but is afraid of the cat. She enjoys, playing, hopping, eating and she loves to be cuddled.

Rabbits: House Rabbits.

House rabbits need their own indoor hutches, which give them a safe place in which to live. This is also the best place to put their litter tray. Rabbits will chew anything, including electrical wiring and furniture. Chewing can be prevented, but this training will take time and patience, and you must be prepared to stick at it.

Grooming.

Long-haired rabbits must be brushed regularly, but all rabbits will benefit from daily gentle stroking with hands or a soft brush. This will also give you a chance to check your rabbit’s health.

Cats: Hunting.

Not everyone likes their cat to go hunting even though it’s perfectly natural. A special elasticated cat collar with a bell might help give his prey a head start, but cats are very good at getting the collar off! The collar needs to be elasticated in case he gets it on the branch of a tree.

Fleas.

As with many pets, cats can catch fleas. You should do all you can to prevent your cat from getting fleas by treating him with a suitable flea prevention product. These come in the form of a powder that you can brush into the cat’s fur, or an oil that you drop into the cat’s coat, behind his head.

Dogs: Tooth care.

You should brush your dog’s teeth everyday to help keep the teeth healthy and strong. You’ll need to use a special meat-flavoured toothpaste, and get your dog used to brushing from an early age.

Training your dog.

Training is very import for all breeds of dog. Whether it’s toilet training, or teaching your dog to obey commands, you should start as soon as possible.

Gerbils: Health care.

Gerbils are very clean and healthy animals and don’t get ill very often. But when they do, you should keep the sick gerbil away from others, and speak to your vet. The most common gerbil health problem is the flu, but you can help prevent this by adding vitamin drops to your gerbil’s food.

Furnishing its home.

Gerbils like to have a sleeping box to hide in, as well as a quantity of clean wood shavings or sawdust. You can also buy them toys such as wheels to give them exercise but don’t give them plastic toys. They can chew them and swallow the fragments.

Ponies: Stabling.

A stable needs to be big enough for the pony to move around comfortably. It must be easy to clean and free from germs that might infect your pony. There must be clean water available so that he can have a drink whenever he needs it. The stable must be somewhere where you can leave your pony knowing he will be safe and happy.

Health and care.

Ponies can get many common illnesses, and it is important to know the signs or symptoms for each of these. If you should also know what to do to prevent your pony getting ill. If you suspect that he might have a particular problem, you need to know what you can do about it. Most important of all you need to know when to call in the vet.
