IN A statement following the Nice referendum on October 19 Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, President, Republican Sinn Féin, said on October 21:
“Amid all the hype about the reversal of the decision of the people
of the 26 Counties on the Nice Treaty, one reality needs to be borne in
mind. That is that more than half a million people have consistently opposed
the militarisation, centralisation, and domination, by the larger states
in the EU.
“Even in that success the entire Establishment still proclaim the Big Lie that Nice is about enlargement when in fact it is about making internal arrangements in the EU, prior to enlargement, which will be to the disadvantage of smaller states.
“No interest — repeat none — has opposed enlargement. Yet moral blackmail in regard to new applicant states was engaged in, playing on the generosity of the Irish people, as the entire Establishment put up large amounts of money and got massive publicity. Even intimidation with regard to possible loss of jobs and developments took place.
“At the end of the day the significant ‘No’ vote remains as a warning for the future, even as the EU tightens its grip. Other developments, expected about 2004, must not push people in Ireland too far.
“The Establishment have been cautioned. There will be another day.
