Glen Electric/GDR strike in NewrySIPTU members employed by Glen Electric and GDR in Newry, Co Down commenced all-out strike action at 8am on October 17, 2002. This dispute arose from the non-resolution of a pay dispute. A total of 320 workers are on strike and have been maintaining a picket on the gates of the company, located at Greenpark Industrial Estate. A SIPTU spokesperson said: "Our members feel yet again that the company have not addressed their needs. SIPTU would urge the company to 'sit down and talk until a solution is found'. "SIPTU would like to reiterate that many of its members employed by the company receive Family Tax Credit because of their low-earning potential in Glen Electric and GDR." |

GPs' association demands ban on burningMEDICAL opposition to the burning of waste was firmly consolidated at the Association of General Practitioners AGM held in the Royal Cork Yacht Club, Crosshaven, Co Cork recently (11-13 October). The Association of General Practitioners (AGP) which represents over 800 GPs throughout Ireland, passed a motion stating: "That the AGP deplores the addition of any toxic materials to our environment and the Irish Government should declare an immediate moratorium on the building of further incinerators in Ireland - whether municipal or toxic." The passing of this motion, which will be communicated to Government, is a ringing endorsement of the seriousness of the health risks associated with incineration. The AGP are adding their voice to those of the Irish Doctors Environmental Association and the Irish Midwifes Association, both of whom stronglyoppose incineration because of the associated negative health effects. |

THE collapse of the Stormont Assembly on October 14 for the fourth time since the Stormont Agreement was signed in 1998 (and for the eighth time since 1972) clearly shows the chronic instability of British rule in Ireland.
The fall of Stormont by the stroke of a British pen illustrates once more that the ‘new’ Stormont is an artificial means to govern an artificial area. The latest crisis has shown the world that the English government is in charge in Ireland and what the Irish people want is ignored and the Dublin administration snubbed . . .

A NEW Cumann of Republican Sinn Féin is now in operation on the north side of Limerick city. The O'Callaghan/Clancy Cumann is called after the Mayor of Limerick, Seoirse Clancy, who was murdered by Crown Forces.
The Cumann was to be formed on December 17, 2001 but due to Special Branch harassment this had to be deferred. The new Cumann is selling 200 copies of SAOIRSE. Anyone wishing to join should contact local paper sellers. Republican calendars for 2003 are also available.
With regret the staff of SAOIRSE announce the death of Séamus Mór Ó Mongáin at the house of his son, Naoise, at Dú Thuama, Béal an Átha, Co. Mhuigheó on October 12.
A full report will be carried in our December issue.
