ON October 26 the Limerick based vice-president of Republican Sinn Féin challenged the Garda Chief Superintendent in the city to solve the mystery abduction and death threat made against a 28-year-old member of the organisation.Des Long from Corbally, recently re-elected as the vice-president of Republican Sinn Féin said that Chief Superintendent Kelly has made some very serious adverse comments in relation to people who simply want to see an end to violent feuding in Limerick.
“The fact is that people in some communities in Limerick are being terrorised by the feuding,” said Des Long. “Yet instead of seeking and supporting a peaceful outcome the Garda chief throws mud obviously in the hope that some of it will stick to Republican Sinn Féin.
“The police tactics are always the same — try to damage and demonise ordinary people and ignore the real issue — but we now call on the Chief Superintendent to support the efforts to bring a peaceful resolution to ongoing conflict in Limerick.
“While he is at it he might like to answer questions about the two members of the 26-County police who kidnapped a Limerick man last August, threatened to shoot him and drove him to an isolated spot in Castleconnell where he broke free from the car and had to dive into the river to escape.
“Almost three months after the incident the police have still to reply
to the complaint made by the man — the Chief Superintendent seems to have
lost the power of speech in relation to this abuse of power by the Gardai.
