A CALL was made by the North Kerry branch of Republican Sinn Féin to members of the judiciary who are unhappy with the workings of the Special Non-Jury Court to publicly state their concerns.Republican Sinn Féin spokesperson John O'Shea from Ballylongford claimed that the Special Court has now become a sophisticated method of ensuring that those the State wish to intern are put in prison.
In a speech to the Ard Fheis of Republican Sinn Féin which took place in Dublin on the weekend of October 19-20, the Ballylongford man was critical of the function of the court.
“This Special Court has become nothing more than a vehicle for the political police to quell dissent and opposition to the British presence in Ireland,” he said. “As Republicans we can expect harassment and intimidation but the scale of the attempt by the police to frame eight members of Republican Sinn Féin as the ‘Eight member Army Council of the CIRA’ is a lie of monstrous proportions.
“We must ensure that these men are given the full support of the party and we must place a protest picket on the court to show that we consider the entire proceedings a disgrace to the 26 County judiciary.
“The fact that the continued use of this special non-jury court is subject of ongoing debate among the judiciary — and there is unease about its use and purpose — indicates that there are some senior figures who do not agree with the facade of interning people on the word of a policeman — now is the time for them to break their silence and publicly express their reservations about the court.”
