Micro computers are small, stand-alone computers that fit on a desk-top. The division between mini and microcomputers has been diminished as computers become smaller and more powerful. Today's micro computer, of which the personal computer is an example, now performs many of the functions previously done by mini-computers. This is because PCs are often connected to a network which allows users to engage in workgroup computing. This means that users can share documents, files, software and resources like printers, when logged-on to the network. networked personal computers (PCs)

There are several types of micro computer. Although the brand names differ they all are based around a microchip known as a microprocessor

Besides PCs micro computers called laptops are also widely used. They are small and portable and enable the user to work when away from a set location and even where there is no electric power supply. They are as powerful as desktop machines but cost more because all the components are miniturized.

Other micro computers are palmtop and notepads. These are even smaller but offer only some of the functions of the desktop and laptop models. Apple computers differ from PCs because they have a different type of microchip but they are nevertheless, microcomputers.
