Captains Notes
Preparation
- Be there or else organise replacement
- Get weather report
- Be aware of the tide
- Fill out log book before and after sailing
- Collect any visitor fees and receipt them in the logbook. Give to money to Treasurer as soon as possible.
- Assist with rigging of all boats
- Ensure everybody is wearing a life jacket/Bouyancy aid
- Outline sailing plan to all
- Ensure everyone is aware of the safety procedures
- Ensure every boat contains at least one competent sailor
- Match competent sailors with inexperienced sailors to improve sailing abilities
- Check that Rescue boat and other boats are rigged correctly
- Organise Activities e.g. Races, trips
- Check that the petrol tank is full. Get petrol/marine mix if needed (Mix is 100:1) Keep receipt and write amount in logbook. Give to receipt to Treasurer as soon as possible for prompt payment.
Rescue boat
- 2 people minimum to lift engine
- 6 people minimum to move rescue boat
- Ensure at least one crew has powerboat experience
- Ensure Anchor is fixed to cleat and stored in box
- Attached Fenders to sides
- Bring 2 Oars and tie them to boat
- Tie towing warp to cleat
- Ensure engine is firmly clamped and tied to boat
- Store petrol container in rear box.
- Bring Rescue bag with full contents:
- First aid box
- Handheld VHF
- 2 oar locks
- Torch
- Sailing knife
- Binoculars
- Flares
- Space Blanket
- Spares
- Rescue boat is First on water - Last off water
- 2 crew at all times
- Emergency stop cord must be worn on wrist at all times
- Train people in use of rescue boat
- Rescue boat co-ordinates session (make sure they know what is happening)
- Keep an eye on all boats and ensure that they stay close by
- Don’t go outside harbour unless conditions are OK and all boat crews are ready and confident to leave
- Keep an eye on all boats
- Change sailing plan if conditions/circumstances change
- Watch out for ferry
- Power give way to sail
Sailing sessions
- NO sailing ABOVE force 4.
- Lifejackets must be worn at all times
- Wetsuits must be worn at all times
- Ensure everyone is able to perform capsize drill (practice at start of season)
- No spinnakers ABOVE force 3 (and later in season only if feasible)
- Finish session well before dark
- Stay out of fairways, mooring and marina work areas.
- Be aware of changing weather conditions and take appropriate actions
- Be careful when towing
- Ensure boats are secured properly
- Drop main sails
- Lift centre board
- Don’t travel too fast
- Make sure boats are not swamped
Assisting capsizes
- Check everyone is OK
- Stay minimum of 4 boat lengths away (in Neutral)
- Don’t interfere unless necessary
- Watch for cold (10 minutes max in water)
- Proceed with caution to capsize scene
- Approach Head to Wind and cut boat engine 2 boat lengths from people in the water
- Provide assistance if required
- Ensure all other boats stay in vicinity
After Sailing
- Damage to boats be recorded in the log book and reported to Maintenance officer if necessary
- Any accidents/incidents on the water or other safety concerns should be recorded in the log book and reported to the Safety officer if deemed necessary
- Organise the Fixing of any minor damage
- Ensure all equipment is packed away in its correct place.
Social
- Encourage people to go for a drink/food after sailing session
- Assist organisation/promotion of SID events
- Encourage people to take part in Dublin Bay regattas
- Promote Ruffian/Dinghy sailing.
