Glenans - October 2005
Thirteen SID members travelled to Collanmore for Halloween celebrations with high wind and high spirits. However heavy disguise proved no guarantee of anonymity, so if you see any of the following...Abigail, Brenda, Cearbhall, Keith, Martina, Nicola, Nigel, Ralph, Robin, Rory, Sabina, Susan... please report their whereabouts to Garda Jim immediately.
Carina, Chris, Damien, Ellen, Eleanor, Paschal and Niamh headed south to Glenans Baltimore where Halloween was celebrated early. However there was a bad "spell" of weather which limited the sailing for the weekend!
Glenans Competent Crew Course - October 2005
A great opportunity for SID members to enhance their cruising skills by following the ISA Competent Crew syllabus with Glenans Sailing club over a series of 3-4 weekends, sailing from Poolbeg Marina in Ringsend, Dublin in Dublin Bay. The first course of this type took place over four weekends in October with two SID members, Una Collins and Gary Coady participating. From Una ?This course is a great way to have some concentrated sailing sessions during which you can build up experience and skills in cruising, without leaving town!?
Read more about Gary?s and Una?s experience of the course.
You can get more information on proposed courses of this type over the winter and spring months by phoning Glenans at 6611481.
Lough Derg Trip - October 2005
After a summer season of excess we had twelve penitential souls who travelled for to Lough Derg last weekend.
Brenda, Carlos, Cearbhall, Collette, Colm, Chris, Damien, Keith, Martha, Niamh, Robin and Trisha braved the bare feet, sleep deprivation, tea and dry toast diet.
We hired three yachts from Shannon Sailing, a Hunter 365, a Feeling 850 and a Westerly(ketch with a mizen rig). We met up in Dromineer on Friday evening for a glass of leomonade and then managed to find out boats on the Marina later that night.
On Saturday after a leisurely morning sorting out the boats, we eventually got going with an invigorating sail to Terryglass in a very fresh breeze. We were cured of all ailments after a round of the holy wells so we then retired to the Derg Inn for supper. The winds had eased by Sunday morning, so we sailed up to Portumna to survey the Galway coast and then headed south, eventually making landfall at Garrykennedy. We had planned to visit the West Bank (Clare) but we decided to leave that till next years return trip. After lunch in GarryK with the Hells Angels, we then had our final sail back to base.
There a lots of picturesque harbours and villages on the lake, and lots of great pubs. Lough Derg is the biggest lake in the 26 counties, and is 25 miles long so there lots sailing to be done. It's well worth the trip.

Congratulations to SID members Aidan, Cearbhall and Joan on successfully completing the dinghy instructors course held in Glenans over the Easter weekend.
2004/5 frostbites
April 2005
The Frostbites was a great success for the 13 plus members who took part. For most it was first time dinghy racing! Some were reluctant to take part initially thinking they had to be experts to sail in frosties. ITA sail #50449 was entered for full series. Heineken sail #50720 was entered for second series. ITA sailed in 15 out of 16 races and Heineken in 6 out of 10. It was great to get out on water on a winters afternoon. Everybody enjoyed themselves, learned a little and didn't take it too seriously. Given this years experience we now have enough competent helm and would encourage people to give it a go next year or why not get organised for the Dun Laoghaire Regatta in July. Results from DMYC

Why not to miss out on sailing by Noel
July 2003
Unlucky SID sailors missed out on a glorious day sailing on the Ruffian on Sunday 13th July. Marguerite and I headed south for Wicklow Hbr. As we passed the marina entrance a seal was noticed on the starboard buoy. So on we went towards Wicklow, that is, at least until I spotted a couple of what I thought were porpoises, which turned out to be five bottle nosed dolphins. So we spent quite a while following them; one swam right beside us, you could reach out and touch it almost it was so close. They were in front, behind, to our sides and jumping up turning around in mid air and landing with big splashes, blowing out of their blowholes - just amazing!. Our biggest regret was not having a camera. While returning to Dun Laoghaire Marguerite turned around, half way between Bray and Dalkey, only to be facing a seal which was swimming along right at the stern - most unusual.
New addition to the fleet
June 2003
SID has purchased a newish 420 which is due to be delivered during the second week of June. The fleet will then consist of five 420's, a Laser 1 and the Ruffian 23-foot yacht. One existing 420 will no longer be sailed and will be used for spares. The club is currently awaiting news of grant applications, and the result will determine what additional dinghies will be purchased in July.
Dinghy Training
June 2003
SID ran dinghy training for members over the weekend of 7th and 8th of June 2003. Many thanks to our qualified ISA instructors Davnat and Joachim who provided the training on a voluntary basis to members of the club. Additional training may be provided later in the year depending on demand.
New equipment
May 2002
SID has purchased a new rescue boat for dinghy rescue duty and also a small tender for going to and from the Ruffian. These are expected to arrive in the next couple of weeks. The Ruffian also got a major overhaul thanks to Noel and his team. The boat is looking shiny and new(er) and a new head (toilet) was also installed.
Irish Sailing Association
May 2002
SID joined the ISA earlier this year. The ISA development officer is helping the club improve with suggestions and tips and access to training etc. Some of the ideas are already introduced e.g. regular social get togethers (Sucessful May get-together was held in Kehoes). Further improvements will be introduced soon. It is hoped to produce a long term development plan/strategy. Comments and suggestions from members and past members would be appreciated.

Trophies won by SID members
September 2000
A lot of last years SID members went on to buy boats at the end of the 1999 season and have mixed results in racing since. The Laser II was the dingy of choice for both Derval O'Carroll and Conor Hillard and both have gone on to glory in the Dublin Bay Racing Series, with Derval picking up first prize for the first Saturday series and Conor comming first in the Tuesday series. Both were undoubtetly helped by their able crews, Yvonne Coakley and Una L'Estrange but more so by the small number of Laser IIs entered. The frostbites should be interesting as this is a handicap event and 420s compete against Laser II. So why not get out there and show them what YOU can do!
Club committee members tackle force 10 winds in Greece
September 2000
Connor Hilliard and Yvonne Coakley having been part of a cruising flotilla in Turkey last year, chartered their own 40 foot cruiser this year with some friends and sailed in Greek waters. It seemed like a good idea, sailing in the clear blue waters, warm winds, sunshine but the reality was somewhat different : force 8 winds gusting 10, with 30 foot swells, but there was sunshine! Although exceptionally strong winds hampered some plans they still managed to visit a few Greek islands off the normal beaten track. (Demonstrations of using a storm jib in force 10 winds will be given by Yvonne and Connor as soon as we get the right conditions!!)
SID members complete courses in Glenans
