Athletics and Cross Country

Athletics and cross-country are the preferred sports of Mr. Hanratty, the PE Teacher. The cross-country season begins in November until the Cloncliffe A.C. invitation races for ages 13 to 20. Winners here in the past were Ciaran Hoare, Francis Hegarty and our teams have been in the first three. The All-Ireland C.B.S. event takes place at the end of November. We were third in this event just two years ago. After Christmas we have the Coolmine Invitation event and this is a preparation race for the West-Leinster Championship which takes place in the Phoenix Park a week later. If teams do well in the West-Leinster then they qualify for the Leinster Championships and then to the All-Ireland event in the Curragh. Track and Field takes place after Easter beginning until the All-Ireland C.B.S., followed by the West-Leinster where the individuals graduate to the Leinster and All-Ireland events if they get in the first three. There are competitions in Running, Jumping and Throwing and competitions may include three events.
