Between The Rhymes

Between the Rhymes is a collection of poems written by children from Belfast, Toledo Canada and from the girls of St. Vincents in Dublin collected and edited by American poet and author Cynthia Millen.

The writers of the poems range from 6 to 16. The published poems where selected from over 300 submitted, they portray a wide variety of poetic types (couplets, limericks, rap, lyric odes, and more) and all possess great heart and imagination.

Below is a picture of the book, followed by some of the poems written by St. Vincents students.

"Holidays forever" by Ciara:
Sunshine all the time
warm sand
under my toes
the smell of the sea
in my nose

The bright colours
The new clothes
No chores
No worries at all
No thoughts at all

An unnamed poem by Lynsey:
The tree is up with lots of lights on
to welcome Santa when he comes.
Dad has left a bottle of beer
to give Santa some Christmas cheer.
And thank him for all the work he's done
bringing gifts to everyone.
Christmas is the best time of year
to remember people who are not here.

And when we open presents on Christman more'
we remember Jesus on the day he was born.

The Rainbow by Suzanne:
A rainbow comes after the rain
Lovely colors make us happy again.
There's red and orange, yellow and blue,
Violet and indigo, too.

Autumn by Stacey:
The leaves turn to gold
The nights grow longer
Soon the days will turn cold
And the wind will be stronger.

Berries, there are plenty
The fields, they prepare to sleep
All the nests are empty
And soon the hills will be white like sheep.

When he left my life by Jennifer:
I knew a wonderful man
He was sharing and caring
I loved hime very much
And he left me.

He was my Granda
That terrible night he left me
I cried and cried all night
Knowing he's not coming back.

Youth by Amanda:
Youth is a way of seeing the world
through fresh and eager eyes.
Youth is a way of seeing each day
as a beautiful surprise.

Youth is a treasure of pleasure and dreams
the passing of time endears
Youth is a wonder with happiness inside
that has little to do with years.
