The Swan Club

The Carrick Swans, formerly known as Greenside Rovers, was founded in 1929, initially as a Junior team.  The first title in 1932 elevated us to Senior level and it just took a further year to capture our first Senior title, thus, the scene was set for a proud tradition in Senior ranks..

Another blast from the past!...Presentation of the John McDonell Cup on the Green

Titles were added in 1935, '36, and 1939 before a lull for the next five years  including a disastrous year in 1942 when we were unable to field a team.  Little did we know the golden period that was ahead of us.  The Swans won the South Senior title from 1944-1948 and in '47, won the Dan Breen Cup for the only time (to date!).  It was a proud day for Willie Wall as he lifted the cup as captain.

Further South Championships were won in 1950, '52, '58 and 1959.

We were unsuccessful for most of the sixties and although reaching four Intermediate finals,  amazingly, we lost all four.  Great work was done to promote the game during this 'valley' period in our history and with the seventies dawned a new era.  Under 21 victory in 1972 in the County Final meant a return to Senior ranks. A loss in the final of 1973 against old rivals the Davins just made victory the next year on a wet day in the Davin Park all the sweeter.  Will we ever forget the scenes at the final whistle?!

More titles were added to the collection in 1983, '84, '85 and 1986. 1990 brought number 20 to the club but number 21 proved elusive for a famine period of 10 years until 2000 and a marvelous win over Ballingarry which saw caption, Kieran Maguire, lift the cup in Clonmel.

The Fair Green

The Green holds a special place in the heart of all Carrick Swans people.  Nearly every child has pucked or kicked a ball there and indeed All-Ireland Medal winners first played on the Green.  With its position adjacent to both of our clubhouses, it has made it easier to promote our national games.  During the Summer months, the Cygnets play hurling and the 'clash of the ash' and enthusiastic shouts can be heard in the many neighbouring houses.  It is a piece of Carrick and Swans history which will be handed down for generations to come.
