riv-er

'riv-er' is both concrete poem and artpiece. It is a response to my experience of the power and flow of the River Lee at night in Cork, particularly the contrast between the dark, serpentine, primitive quality of the water, and the more rigid but lighter geometry of the city.
modern cities trap us within a grid of straight lines and uncompromising right angles. In contrast natural forms are predominately curved and seem to represent a freeing of qualities and forces that relate intimately to human needs. Yet these contain a darker energy compared to which the confines of the city may seem safe territory.
