ROSEMARY CANAVAN
I was born in Scotland in 1949. My
parents, who were English, moved to the
north of Ireland when I was three, and I
lived there until my early 20s when I
moved to Cork. I studied Art at the
Academie Julian, Paris, and English at
the University of Sussex in England, and
my various jobs included teaching at
Spike Island Prison in Cork harbour.
Being brought up in a divided culture, by
parents who belonged to yet another
culture, sharpened my awareness of
language. My interest in art began
with the magical act of creating
companions by drawing them, during a
solitary and sometimes lonely childhood.
Recently I have been working with digital
media. These include three series
of prints and two web sites. My work is
coloured by a strong awareness of the
energy of nature, and the need for a
living contact with it which is missing
from urban culture, In
particular, I am interested in the effect
on the human psyche of living in modern
cities.My
art work has been exhibited in Ireland,
France and England and my solo show of
digital prints 'Figures from the
Composition of Time' was held this summer
in the Droichead Arts Centre, Drogheda.
My first collection of poetry, 'The
Island', was published by Story Line
Press in 1994, and I have read at a
number of festivals including the
Cheltenham Literary Festival in England.
Two of my children's books have been
published in Ireland.
