3rd HALF FASTING RETREAT

The Transformative Power of Half Fasting

Wed. 24th to Tue. 30th August, 2005

Chuya Hashimoto, Ecologist, Macrobiotic teacher, and pioneer of Natural Farming was born in Japan in 1947. After graduating from Toho Gakuen University in 1971 he established a theatre group, KIVA. In 1973 in an effort to explore new avenues of performance he carried out one week’s fasting. This was a turning point for Mr Hashimoto who said that as he returned on the train from his retreat he felt so happy and at peace that he felt like hugging everyone in the train. Following this he met Masanbou Fukouka who is famous as a practitioner of the Lao-tzu philosophy and teacher of natural farming in Japan. Profoundly affected by Mr Fukuoka he has since that time continued to research into these two areas. In 1974 he met George Ohsawa whose Macrobiotic approach to nutrition incorporates the Yin and Yang theory and a traditional Japanese way of healing through nutrition. In 1981 Mr Hashimoto moved from Tokyo to the mountains in Fukushima where he cultivated land to grow vegetables and built his own home, and where he has since raised five children with a food regime based on whole grains and vegetables. This diet obviated the need for western medical care. Chuya’s philosophy is self-management of one’s own health, healing through food and ‘to be in tune with nature and live in accordance with the laws of the universe’. This life-style is in accordance with the philosophy of Lao-tzu and of natural farming. In 1986 Mr Hashimoto established ‘PAS’ – Planetary Alternative Society and began to publish a magazine, ‘Macrobian’ to promote his ideas. In 1994 he established an NGO (non-government organisation) to protect the future of mankind from such global problems as environmental degradation and poverty.
