Ladies Football

On Tuesday evening 6th May 1997 a meeting was held in Tramore GAA Club with a view to setting up a Ladies Gaelic Football Club and Committee. Attended by twelve people this meeting was chaired by local priest Fr. Tom Flynn. Prior to this, however, training sessions had been taking place with over eighty girls attending. These were being run by John Kindlon, a teacher in Holy Cross N.S. Tramore. John and Fr. Flynn with their U-14 and U-16 girls were to feature prominently in the very near future. At this early stage it was the intention to enter the Tramore ladies in the U-14 Championship competition.

Later that year, on Sunday 12th October the first of what was to become the annual outing to the Ladies Gaelic Football All-Ireland Finals at Croke Park was held. This has proved to be a very enjoyable day for all concerned and keeps the girls in touch with the standards required at the game's highest level.
After only one year in existence the Tramore Ladies were now entering onto the County scene. At U-14 level Elaine Power, Niamh Owens and Sarah O' Driscoll were selected. This team went on to win the U-14 All-Ireland title in Dr. Cullen Park, Carlow in July, with Elaine Power scoring the winning point in the narrowest of victories over Meath. This represented the first All-Ireland Championship medal return to Tramore GAA Club, similarly with the Munster Championship medals won a month beforehand.

The same honours were achieved by our U-16 county members a month later when they won All-Ireland medals after defeating Monaghan at Birr. The Tramore girls on that team lined out as follows: Mairead Liston, Donna Frost, Kate Maher, Miriam Liston and Fiona O'Reilly. Niamh Owens won a Munster Championship medal with them in July. On the Club scene success was breeding success with the Minor U-18 team winning the County Final against Ardmore in a very exciting match. The members of this team were: Susan MacSweeney, Aoidin McManus, Kate Canty, Mary-Claire Power, Gillian Curran, Kate Maher, Eileen Newell, Miriam Liston, Donna Frost, Elaine Power, Mairead Liston, Fiona O’Reilly, Lisa Walsh, Deirdre Kelly, Fiona Kelly (Capt.), Claire King, Emma Walsh, Sarah Brennan.

1999 began with Tramore Ladies Gaelic Football Club becoming a Senior Club with a Juvenile section, having been formed initially as a Juvenile Club. Donna Frost became the first from the Tramore Club to be selected for the Waterford Senior Panel. She was followed shortly afterwards by Fiona O'Reilly, with Elaine Power joining in the Autumn.

Tramore Ladies continued on their winning way in 2000 with Elaine Liston and her team capturing the U-16 B County Championship when they defeated Kilrossanty at Stradbally on 10th April. Having won the U-16 "A" title in 1999 Tramore now claimed the Captaincy of the County U-16 team for 2000 and Elaine Power led them to a Munster final clash with Limerick in Tipperary on July 12th. Luck was not on our side on this occasion with the Waterford Ladies finally runners up with a two point defeat due to a last minute Limerick goal. Our Club's representatives on the U-14 County team this year were Rachel Wall, Teresa-Anne O'Reilly and Lisa Palmer. On the County Minor team from Tramore were Miriam Liston, Donna Frost, Fiona O'Reilly and Elaine Power. Tramore players on the County Junior team were Carmel Kissane, Mairead Liston, Teresa Mollohan, Miriam Liston, Donna Frost, Fiona O'Reilly and Elaine Power. During their League campaign in the spring of 2000 the Waterford Senior Ladies team benefited from the contribution of Tramore's Donna Frost, Elaine Power, Fiona O'Reilly and Julie Cunningham. On the club scene Tramore fielded two Junior teams during their League campaign in early 2000. The most recent development has been a Senior team comprised of members of the Tramore, Rathgormack and Mount Sion clubs who opened their Championship season on the May-Day Bank Holiday. Rathgormack's Sean Power and Tramore's Pat Toomey coached this "combined" team. Hopefully all this will see that elusive Senior Championship title with Tramore in the near future.
