Golf There are many fine golf courses within the vacinity including: Portarlington, Tullamore, Kilkea Castle, Birr, Glasson, K-Club, Esker Hills, Mullingar, The Curragh, The Heath and Carlow. The newest and most spectacular golf course is the Heritage Golf course. This facility is located in Killenard village which is very close to Portarlington. This championship golf course designed by Seve Ballesteros and Jeff Howes is a fantastic facility with a state-of-the-art Clubhouse, Seve 'Natural Golf School', only the third of its kind in the World and an indoor and outdoor green bowls stadium - the indoor stadium is the only one of its kind in the Republic of Ireland.
The Shannon is one of the best rivers in the world for Salmon and Trout fishing. Running through County Offaly is the Grand Canal with some excellent fishing opportunities. Course fishing, game angling and mayfly fishing are all available. The Barrow River runs within two miles of Treascon Lodge. Racing Kilbeggan horse races run right through the summer months and there is greyhound racing available in Mullingar every Tuesday and Saturday nights. The Curragh, Punchestown and Naas racecourses are a short distance from Treascon Lodge. Walking trips Explore the mountains, wander by the lakes stroll in the fields, learn on the bogs...... This is a walkers paradise. A new walkway commencing in Portarlington leads you through fascinating local bogland to a recently developed lake. Environment The Loch Boora parklands (see links page). A creative combination of nature and the human hand is restoring the cut away bogs of West Offaly to their original ice-age splendour. 2000 hectares of unique mosaic style habitats have been restored by nature alone. The Slieve Bloom Mountains with 24 sign posted walking trails is an area rich in wildlife and beautiful flowers combined with new coniferous plantations. Horse Riding Equestrian centres with both indoor and outdoor arenas, trekking and pony camps. Annaharvey Equestrian Centre is nearby and has a large indoor arena. Qualified instruction is available for all ages and levels. Attractions Enjoy Portarlington's Huguenot background. Local attractions include Emo Court, Lea Castle, Rock of Dunamase, National Stud and Japanese Gardens. Peatland world explores the flora and fauna of the Midlands's bogs. Pubs, Restaurants and entertainment Portarlington has many and varied pubs and some fine restaurants for lunch or an evening meal. There is usually music available in some of the pubs on weekend nights. |
