Trim Castle is one of the most imposing Anglo-Norman fortresses in Ireland and it stands in the centre of the town by the River Boyne. The ruins cover a hectare and include a vast keep flanked by rectangular towers. The original castle was built by Hugh de Lacy in 1172, though the present structure was from a later period. A major restoration has been completed and the castle was reopened to the public in July 2000. Nearby are the ruins of the Royal Mint and a gaunt skeleton called the Yellow Steeple, dating from the 14th Century, the last remains of an Augustinian Abby, destroyed in 1649. The movie Braveheart was filmed here. |
