How Castles Were Built

Lots of people were needed to build a castle. Often prisoners were forced to work on the castle. They had little or no skills. They were shown what to do by master craftsmen. Alot of different craftsmen worked on the castle. Below is a table of the different craftsmen and what they did.

Stone Masons They cut stones so they fit together.
Carpenters They worked with timber to build the roof.
Glaziers They made windows for the later castles. The windows were made from stained glass.
Plumbers They made lead sheets for the roof.
Blacksmiths They made nails to hold everything in place.
Master mason He watched over all the workers.




Building A Castle


A castle had two walls to protect it from being attacked. The site where a castle was to be built was carefully chosen in places hard to attack like the edge of a cliff. Stones were held together using mortar. Building a castle took alot of time and effort.
