Castle Life

Life in the castle was tough because it was cold and dirty. Fireplaces heated the cold walls. There was no electricity so there was no central heating and light was gotten from candles. As we already know the most important room in the castle was the Great hall. In the first castles the people ate and slept here. The lords family slept at the top end of the hall. Later castles had rooms for the lords family. The floor of the great hall was covered with rushes and often animals like cats and dogs were kept here. The rushes had to be changed often because of food, grease and animal poop on the floor.
HOW DISGUSTING!

So why did people stay in the castle?
Well the main reason was they were protected by the thick castle walls and most of the time life was good there.

Siege
This happened in times of war where an attacking army surrounded the castle and eventually the people of the castle surrendered to the army if they were starving. This is why it was important to keep large stores of food in the castle
