Games now and Long Ago

We interviewed our grandparents and they told us the games they played when attending Tubber National School.

Four Corners:
My Granny played four corners. She taught me how to play it.
You need five children to play it. One child stands at each corner of the
square the other remaining child stands at the center of the square.
As the children move from corner to corner the child in the middle
tries to take their place.

Ring-a-Ring-a-Rosie:
My Granny liked to play ring-a-ring-a-rosie.
Children stand in a circle and join hands and sing the rhyme.
It sounds like great fun.
Conkers:
My Grandad liked to play conkers with his friends. He would
place a twine through his conker. His friend would do the same.
One player would hold up the conker the other aims to hit it
trying to break it.
.

We also looked at our favourite games that we play at school. Here are some listed below

Hopscotch:
I like playing hopscotch on the markings in the yard. I throw a small bean bag and hop to the number square it falls on.
Stuck in the Mud:
I like playing stuck in the mud. Someone is on and if you get caught you are frozen to one spot until the other children unfreeze you by crawling under your legs.

Soccer
At school I like to play soccer. See me playing in my picture.

Rounders
We love playing team games like rounders together even though our
yard is very small.

Skipping:
I like to skip at school and I learned new rhymes Last year when doing the skip-a -thon like teddy bear, teddy bear.

SPORT

Tubber National School amalgamates with Boston National School for G.A.A./Cumann na mBunscoil activities. The schools are both small, rural, two-teacher schools. The teachers train the hurling team and camogie team.
Last year we contested the Division IV hurling final and emerged victorious. To date this year we have qualified for the semi-final of Division III and we are looking forward to defending our title. Our camogie team looks particularly impressive this year and has also qualified for the semi-final in their division.
We enjoy meeting and training with the boys and girls of Boston National School and we work hard to represent our schools and parish with pride wearing the parish colours of "black and amber".
On June 10th Colin Lynch (Clare Senior Hurler) will host a "Lift and Strike" competition down at our local G.A.A. pitch. Quite a number of schools in the North Clare area will be represented and it should be a fun day for all.
We also received two kit bags of Sports Equipment sponsored by the National Sports Council. Included is a lot of equipment to play many co-operative games in the schoolyard, which develop tolerance, and justice in sport and focusing on participation rather than winning. We have had many hours of fun and play from this equipment.
