Community Links

Our school has a very central role in our community. In the past few years the local post office and shop have closed but the school has remained a focal point. The school is used for many parish events.

School Web Site launch

Earlier this year we launched our school web site at the school and invited members of our community to view it. The web site is our own work on the local geography and history of the area. We linked it up to the local hurling club and are working on a parish links page currently. Our web site address:

School Concerts

Concert
Every year our school hosts a nativity play. Sometimes we present it as a concert in our school, but last year we performed the "Nativity" in front of the congregation on Christmas Eve. For us this brings Christmas to life.
We work hard on our production and last year was no exception. Lines had to be learnt off by heart, songs had to be practised and costumes made.
On the day of our Christmas holidays we were ready. We were all very enthusiastic about taking part and practising our tin whistle because we are a small school everyone had a part to play.
On Christmas Eve we performed the play and everybody enjoyed it. They said we brought Christmas to life for them with our play.

Clare 250 mile Cycle
The annual Clare 250 mile cycle in aid of Cancer Research takes place in late May. Participants are sponsored and all money raised goes to this charity. Our school is one of the stop-off points for the cyclists, to provide them with refreshments and a well-deserved break. All the locals come out to cheer on the cyclists. We are very proud of the meaningful and useful way in which our school is contributing to this worthy cause.

Polling Station
Our school is used as a polling station. In this way our school building is being used in a way that allows our community members to exercise their right to vote in our democracy. However in the past our teacher told us that few governments were democratic. Kings, Pharaohs and Emperors inherited their power and ruled as absolute rulers. This year on June 11th it will be required for this purpose.
The Irish Constitution was drawn up in 1937. This constitution is a set of laws by which the country will be governed. This can be changed or amended by a vote called a referendum.
On June 11th all who are entitled to vote will be asked to vote YES or NO to a proposal to change the constitution in relation to the constitutional rights of people born in the island of Ireland to Irish Citizenship. On this date European Parliament elections and local elections will also be held. We are members of the E.U along with 24 other member states. Every five years people entitled to vote can vote for their chosen candidate for the European Parliament to represent us the people of Clare in Europe.
In the local elections people in our community will be voting for their chosen candidate for the Clare County Council elections. Any candidate who gets enough votes can become a County Councilor and represent the people of Tubber at County Council meetings and decision-making. Therefore our school building plays a very central role in the whole democratic process.

Imeall na Boirne

Bishop Willie Walshe's visit to our school

Imeall na Boirne

We are one of the parishes involved in this pilot scheme. It reflects the changes that have taken place in the church. The communities are urged to become more actively involved in the church. this year parents were extremely involved in the preparation of the children for the sacrament of confirmation. This meant that many meetings took place using the school as a base and the children took part in liturgies prior to the Confirmation ceremony.A few weeks before confirmation Bishop Willie Walsh visited us in our school because he would not be confirming us on May 30th. On the Confirmation day Fr.Brian Geoghegan confirmed the children in Boston church.

Altar Servers
Here in Tubber National School some of the pupils serve at the morning masses. The children in fourth class and up pair into twos. We have a rota. I serve on a Monday and Wednesday because there are only nine people serving. There were five new servers this year and seeing as only four people knew how to serve I had to teach two people. The church is just across the road from the school so it is very convenient.
