Introduction Flora of the Burren

corcomroe abbey

Corcomroe Abbey (a cistercian abbey), the abbey of St. Mary of the Fertile Rock, was founded by King Donall Mor O'Brien. A well preserved church, it is a cruciform building. The roof of the Chancel is richly vaulted and shows chevron herringbone decoration. Its clustered columns display finely carved capitals bearing floral designs. The effigy of King Conor O'Brien is recessed into the west wall of the chancel. An interesting decoration is the dragon's head on the north-angle shaft of the chancel. Above the tomb of Conor O'Brien on a slab is the figure of a mitred (smiling?) bishop.
